University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior 165-pounder Josh Condon was chosen the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for his part in the Mocs' three big-margin wins Saturday and Monday to clinch the program's 27th league title. He pinned both opponents Saturday and won 12-7 in Monday's 30-4 team victory over second-place Camel. Condon is 13-0 for his career in regular-season SoCon matches, including 6-0 this year.
Basketball
• The Tennessee Wesleyan College men's basketball team finished 13th in the final NAIA Division II poll and will open next Thursday at 5 p.m. EST against Grace (Ind.) in the national tournament at Point Lookout, Mo. The Bulldogs (25-7) surged up the polls late in the season after their winning streak reached 18 games.
Baseball
• Tyler Latham hit a tying grand slam in the eighth inning and scored the winning run on Andrew Smith's single in the 10th as Bryan College edged Cumberland University 11-10 in NAIA baseball at Dayton. Jess Cartner was 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs and Smith and Grant Zawadzki also had three hits each for Bryan (11-4), Smith with two RBIs and Zawadzki with two runs. Chris Jeffries was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
• Scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, Cleveland State pounded Gordon State 16-3 in junior college baseball Wednesday at Barnesville, Ga. Ethan Davis had a two-run double and another RBI and Keith Buckhault and Zach Janes also had two-run doubles for the Cougars (9-4), and J.D. Cowart and Randall Coley also had two RBIs each. Tyler Kilgore was the winning pitcher.
• Third-ranked Lee University won 7-3 and 16-4 in NAIA baseball Wednesday at Milligan. Keegan Yuhl allowed six hits and one earned run in his five innings on the mound for the Flames in the first game, when Lee put the win away with a three-run seventh featuring an RBI double by Josh Silver, an RBI single by Karsten Strieby and a Derrick Pitts sacrifice fly. Corey Davis tripled, doubled and drove in five runs in game two, when Silver had three hits and scored three times.
Softball
• Berry College beat Covenant 10-0 and 8-2 in NCAA Division III softball Wednesday at Frost Stadium. Abbey Daniels and Jessica Washington had three hits and four and three RBIs in the first game for Berry (6-2), when Caillee Shamoun pitched a five-hitter. Kristen Stoll was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game two, when Covenant's Jenni Jobe and Courtney Wagoner each was 2-for-4, Jobe with an RBI. Covenant freshman Ellie Groenendyk was named the Great South Athletic Conference pitcher of the week for her five innings with one run allowed in two games; she gave up three hits and two runs in four innings Wednesday.
• Angie Hughes pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Lee University beat visiting Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in the first game of their softball doubleheader Thursday, and Lee (8-0) scored nine runs in the first inning of game two and won 11-8. Dezirae Parsons homered and had another RBI in the first game, when Meghan Macia was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Parsons was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Dominique Hannah was 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBIs and three runs in game two for Lee, while Brandi Lasley was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Courtney Gobble was 3-for-4 and scored twice for TWC (2-7).
Soccer
• Lee University men's soccer coach Paul Furey announced this week six signees for the program's move to NCAA Division II. They are 6-foot midfielder Robbie Cutchin from Marietta's Lassiter High School, a state semifinalist last spring, and the state champion Concorde Fire of the US Development Academy; 6-1 all-state forward Eli Price from Houston High School in Germantown, Tenn., and the Mid-South Futbol Club, for whom he scored more than 30 goals last season; Quade Marinell, a Florida state all-star game participant from Bishop Verot High School who had 25 goals and 15 assists last season for the Cape Coral Cyclones; 6-foot defensive midfielder Austin Waddell from Maryville High School and regional club power FC Alliance; 6-2 outside back Junho Seok from South Korea by way of two years at Illinois Central College; and 5-10 versatile attacker Collin Cole from North Fort Myers, Fla., the Cape Coral Cyclones and Oasis Charter School, which got 22 goals from him last season. Seok was first-team all-region for Illinois Central, which went to the NJCAA national tournament, and Furey sees him for sure making a quick impact. "I'm excited about this recruiting class," the coach said. "Each of these players brings something special to the team and will be competing for starting jobs and playing time right away."
Lacrosse
• Sewanee junior goalkeeper Tommy Healy from Washington, D.C., was chosen the Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse defensive player of the week after he made 11 saves in the Tigers' 15-10 win last Saturday over Wittenberg.
