Covenant edges Rhodes in basketball

The Covenant College men's basketball team improved to 8-4 for the season with a 55-53 home victory over Rhodes College.

Trailing 52-46 with five minutes left to play, Covenant took the lead at 54-53 with 55 seconds left on a Colton McGriff layup and survived two missed Lynx 3-point shots in the last 20 seconds.

T.J. Cox began the rally with two free throws and led the Scots with 13 points, while McGriff added 11. John Dunavant made five 3s in pacing Rhodes (8-6) with 19.

Bryan College battled two first-place teams close in losing an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Milligan, which won the men's game 78-76 after taking the women's contest 61-54.

Brandon Cole was 8-of-10 from the field in scoring 19 points for Bryan's Lions (5-11, 1-3), and Robert Riley and Tim Fortenberry scored 14 each while Robert Troino and Carrin Nash added 13 and 10. Fortenberry also had six assists.

Morgan Burnette had 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Lions (7-7, 2-3), but Chattanooga's Kayla Kelly was one of three players for Milligan (12-5, 5-0) with 14 points. Jaimee Hill and Dorian Freeman had 11 and 10 rebounds with their 14, and Kelly had eight rebounds and three steals.

Tennessee Wesleyan lost 68-55 in an AAC women's game at Columbia (S.C.) College, as Nikki Craig had 19 points and seven rebounds and Deidre Price contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for the winning Koalas (5-12, 2-3). Heather Gibson had 13 points and three steals and Cody Houck scored 11 points for Wesleyan (6-7, 3-2), while Michelle Davis suffered through a 1-for-8 shooting performance but grabbed nine rebounds.

Led by Chattanoogan Robyn Anthony, the NJCAA Division I Cleveland State women's team downed Division III juco team Georgia Northwestern 84-52 on Tuesday in Cleveland.

Anthony had 19 points, seven assists and four steals for the Lady Cougars (10-5), while Hannah Brown and Chelsea Jones scored 13 points each and Me'Lisa Martinez and Tre'Ketta Bonds added eight rebounds apiece in the win. Alissa Nichelson scored 14 points and Odessa Person had 21 rebounds with 12 points for the Lady Bobcats (7-8), while Terika Mostella had 13 rebounds.
