Biz Briefs: Metro Dalton among biggest job losers

Metro Dalton among biggest job losers

Dalton, Ga., ranked third among the nation's 372 metropolitan areas for the biggest percentage loss in jobs during the past year.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday that metro Dalton, which includes Whitfield and Murray counties, lost 2,000 jobs, or 3.2 percent of its employment, from November 2011 to November 2012.

Dalton was among only 77 metro areas - about one of every five major cities - that lost jobs in the past 12 months. The BLS said the only metro areas with bigger percentage job losses in the past year were Yuba City, Calif., down 4.5 percent, and La Cruces, N.M., down 3.5 percent.

In the same 12-month period, metro Chattanooga added 3,900 jobs, or a 1.7 percent employement gain. But metro Cleveland, Tenn., lost 400 jobs, or a 1 percent decline in employment.

Budget battle delays tax filing

The Internal Revenue Service says late changes to federal tax laws should mean only a short delay for most taxpayers to file their 2012 returns.

The agency said Tuesday that more than 120 million taxpayers - about 80 percent of all filers - should be able to start filing their federal returns on Jan. 30. Others will have to wait until late February or March to file because the agency needs time to update and test its systems.

Those who will have to wait include people claiming residential energy credits, depreciation of property or general business credits. The filing season had been slated to start Jan. 22 but was delayed because of the big tax package passed by Congress Jan. 1.
