Project: Northgate Mall is undergoing one of its biggest makeovers in its 40-year-old history.

Owner: CBL & Associates Properties Inc.

Location: Hixson Pike and state Highway 153.

Contractor: EMJ Corp.

Scope: The first phase of a multimillion-dollar renovation to the Hixson mall and adjacent shopping center will take place this year. The work at the adjacent center where TJ Maxx is located involves a major physical upgrade. The center will gain two new stores, Ross Dress for Less and Michael's Arts & Crafts. Remodeling of the mall's interior will include new flooring, ceiling and lighting upgrades and repainting. Plans also call for redoing the mall's main entrance, which faces the adjacent center.

Timeline: Work at the adjacent center is to be done before the end of the year.

Future: CBL has said it will add more new stores and restaurants at the mall.

History: The mall opened in 1972 and is 823,000 square feet. It has about 60 specialty shops as well as anchors Belk, J.C. Penney and Sears. CBL bought the mall for $11.5 million in cash over a year ago.
