The temperature in Chattanooga hit a record high Saturday and could do the same today.

Temperatures crawled up to 72 degrees Saturday afternoon, breaking the previous record by 1 degree, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Winton in the Morristown, Tenn., office. That previous high temperature was set in 1890.

The heat could break another record today. Projections suggest the temperature will hit about 72 degrees this afternoon, which would be 2 degrees shy of the all-time high. The temperature will fall to about 54 degrees tonight.

And there the temperatures should sit in the coming days. The highs for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday should only reach about 50 degrees.

And, beginning today, residents should keep their umbrellas close. There is about a 70 percent chance of rain this afternoon with the potential for a thunderstorm, Winton said. The rain should continue all day Monday and Tuesday. Winton projects a cease in the rainfall early Wednesday.

North Georgia residents should expect rain from today until at least Tuesday morning. Today's high will be in the low 70s but will fall for the rest of the week, NWC meteorologist Alex Gibbs said from the Peachtree City, Ga., office. For the rest of the week, the highs will be in the high 40s or low 50s.

Gibbs said he doesn't foresee much colder weather coming to the Southeast in the near future.

"But the models change 10, 12, 13 days out," he said. "We could be looking at cold weather 10, 12, 13 days from now."
