DETROIT -- Saying Volkswagen wants a bigger share of the growing U.S. sport utility market, officials today rolled out a new midsize vehicle which they believe could grab more sales.

Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen Group of America’s chief executive, said the SUV would sport both performance and fuel efficiency.

The vehicle, making its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show, would be designed and priced for U.S. drivers.

The SUV is still a concept vehicle at this point, but top VW officials are expected to make a decision this year on whether to move ahead with production and where it would be assembled.

Chattanooga’s auto assembly plant and VW’s Mexico facilities are likely candidates, officials say.
