WAVERLY, Tenn. - Foul play is suspected in two Wednesday house fires that killed three in one of the homes in Humphreys County, authorities said.

Early-morning fires destroyed the two homes located about five minutes apart belonging to Carl and Elaine Hewitt, said State Fire Marshal's Office spokesman Christopher Garrett.

Three bodies were found in one of the houses. They have not yet been identified, but investigators say all the vehicles belonging to the couple were at the home.

WSMV-TV reports that Elaine Hewitt is a principal at Erin Elementary School in Houston County.

Director of Schools Cathy Harvey said in a statement that school officials were aware of the fire "that impacts our school system. ...Our thoughts are with the families and the community that has been affected."

Garrett said deputies and firefighters arrived at both homes shortly after 5:30 a.m. and the residences were engulfed. Firefighters were unable to put out the flames and the homes were destroyed.

The district attorney's office has been notified about the fires, and the state Fire Marshal's Office is assisting the investigation.

The cause of death of the victims has not been determined, nor has the cause of the two fires.
