Lady Mocs hold off Samford

BIRMINGHAM — The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team jumped out to a 13-0 lead tonight at Samford, but the game was no runaway.

The Lady Mocs saw their lead cut to 2 points multiple times in the second half, but Samford was never able to tie or take the lead. UTC had a rough night at the free-throw line (9-for-18), but it hit enough in the final minute for a 66-60 win.

The win puts UTC (15-3, 8-1) in first place in the Southern Conference, a half-game ahead of Elon (10-7, 7-1).

Meghan Downes started in place of Kylie Lambert, who has been battling shin splints, coach Wes Moore said earlier this week. Downes finished with 7 points. Ashlen Dewart scored 8 of 9 UTC points in one stretch during the closing minutes, going 4-for-4 at the line, and finished with 14 points.

UTC had no answer for Samford guard Jazmine Martin, who led all scorers with 31 points.
