University of Tennessee at Chattanooga faculty member Sybil Baker, a Pushcart Prize nominee for the 2011 fiction work "Women Who Smoke," will present a free lecture from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the UTC University Center.

This "introduction to the author and her works" is presented by the Outreach Program of the UTC Library.

The Huffington Post has called Baker one of "today's strongest emerging talents in literary fiction and poetry." She has written "The Life Plan," "Talismans" and "Into This World." She serves as fiction editor for "Drunken Boat," a journal of art and literature.

At UTC, she serves as a University of Chattanooga Foundation assistant professor in the English Department. She also teaches in the City University of Hong Kong's MFA program and at the Yale Writers Conference.

Recently, as a visiting writer at the American Writers Festival in Singapore, she was named the National Critics Choice Best New Cross-Cultural Literary Fiction and Poetry Writer of the Year.

In her program, Baker said, she will "focus on living abroad and coming back to the States and the effect that has had on my writing. I'll also talk about how to write about other cultures and some of the research I did for my latest novel."
