A 31-year-old Jackson County, Ala., man is dead today after a fatal exchange of gunfire with police at his home near the town of Section just after daybreak.

Jackson County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said Jeremy Daniel Gregory, of County Road 48, Section, was found dead inside his home after he traded gunfire with Madison County SWAT team members around 7 a.m. today. The Madison County group had been called to the scene after the situation grew more serious and Gregory had fired shots in the direction of Jackson County deputies, Harnen said.

Gregory had been the subject of a call about wreckless driving late Monday night and another call later about shots having been fired in the area, officials said.

When deputies got to his home, Gregory reportedly ran inside to arm himself with a long gun, according to officials.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has assumed the lead in the investigation since it involves an officer-involved shooting, Harnen said. Gregory's body has been sent for an autopsy to determine whether officers fired the fatal shot or whether Gregory turned one of the guns found inside the house on himself.
