Soddy-Daisy cancels 4th of July events

Buckets of water might be OK for the firemen's muster, but buckets of rain is another matter for Soddy-Daisy's annual Fourth of July celebration.

Soddy-Daisy Police Chief Phil Hamrick announced Tuesday that the fireworks and other activities originally planned for today, July 4, have been reset for the Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Robert Cothran, president of Soddy-Daisy Chapter 942 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, which organizes both events at the North Park across from Soddy Lake, said weather conditions would have been too much to overcome.

"The place is already soggy," he said Tuesday morning. "More rain will make it even worse."

At press time Tuesday, WRCB-TV meteorologists were calling for an 80 percent chance of rain today. Flood watches have been issued for much of the region.
