Ask A Doctor: What can I do to get rid of my saggy jowls and neck?

Q. What can I do to get rid of my saggy jowls and neck? I am beginning to look like my mother.

A. A facelift or rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that repositions and lifts the muscles and fibrous layers of the face and neck, which have fallen with age. It is not the skin that has fallen; it is just going along for the ride. There should never be pulling or stretching of the skin. The incision should not cause you to lose hair by shifting the hairline and/or change your ear shape or position. Incision placement should be a primary concern because after surgery it is the only thing that is visible. This is an outpatient procedure. There are no bandages or dressings, no drains, and there usually is very limited bruising and swelling. Most patients return to work within two weeks. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes. Noninvasive alternatives do not work and have no lasting effect. When looking for a surgeon, find a trained, board certified, experienced specialist.
