Society of Appalachian Historians honors Dunn
The Society of Appalachian Historians has honored Tennessee Wesleyan College professor Durwood Dunn by naming an award in his honor.
The society's Durwood Dunn Award will recognize historians who, over the course of their careers, make outstanding contributions to the study and teaching of Appalachian history.
"Throughout my career, the study of Appalachia and its people has become one of the most important and informative fields in American history. I am greatly honored to have participated in that development," says Dunn, who has taught history at the Athens, Tenn., college for 38 years.
Locher Foundation awards 52 scholarships
The MaryEllen Locher Foundation awarded 52 college scholarships to students for the upcoming school year.
The foundation is a national program for children who have either lost a parent to breast cancer or have a parent who is a breast cancer survivor. The awards are designed to ease financial and emotional burdens faced by families dealing with the disease.
Area winners among the recipients are: Emily Bishop, Courtney Combs, Casey Crump, Jasmine Johnson, Briar Lowe, Sarah Moore, Katie McDowell, Zach McKelvey, Chris Miles, Jameson Mullinax, Taylor Mullinax, Alex Mullin, Grayson Mullin, Libby Peigen, Alanna Rice, Nick Russell, Haley Shields, Chris Spencer and Steven Williams,
Applications for the 2014-15 school year will be accepted beginning Oct. 1 and are due by Jan. 13, 2014.

Air Force Airman Leven D. Butler has graduated from the Avionics Systems Apprentice Course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.
The course trains students to inspect, service and repair malfunctions on avionics systems.
He is the son of David and Jenny Butler of Athens, Tenn., and a 2011 graduate of McMinn County High School.
