The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday rejected most of the environmental objections to extending the life of TVA's Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant another 20 years. In May, the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, the Bellefonte Efficiency and Sustainability Team and Mothers Against Tennessee River Radiation jointly challenged TVA's license renewal and raised eight objections to the license extension. The advisory safety and licensing board rejected most of the groups' complaints, with the exception of concerns raised about storage of nuclear waste from the plant.
The NRC has suspended any new licenses or license extensions for existing nuclear plants until a plan is developed for how radioactive wastes will be permanently stored. NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said the nuclear waste complaints about Sequoyah were held in abeyance until the NRC develops is waste storage plan no later than 2018.
Embroidery shop opens
Stitches Embroidery, a store specializing in custom embroidery, is opening at Northgate Mall in Hixson. CBL and Associates Properties, the Chattanooga-based development firm that owns Northgate, said the new store is located in the Sears Court at Northgate and joins other new tenants at the mall, including Auntie Anne's Pretzels and Old Navy.
"Throughout our renovation we will continue to open new stores that respond to the needs of our shoppers," Norhtgate General Manager Steve Banks said.
