Chattanooga tops list for visitors

Men's Journal has named Chattanooga one of the top 50 places to visit in the U.S. this summer.

The magazine called Chattanooga "The South's New Adventure Mecca" and focused on the many outdoor activities in the area, including rock climbing at Sunset Rock, rafting on the Ocoee and the region's 100 miles of biking trails. The magazine also named the Boathouse Rotisserie and Raw Bar as a great spot to stop for a beer.

Inflation in check despite gas hike

A jump in gasoline costs pushed a measure of U.S. consumer prices up in June. But the overall trend in inflation stayed tame. The U.S. Department of Labor said that the consumer price index increased 0.5 percent in June from May. Two-thirds of the increase came from a 6.3 percent jump in gas prices, the largest since February.

Geotourism event planned

The East Tennessee River Valley Geotourism Council and the Southeast Watershed Forum are planning the first Southeastern conference on geotourism in cooperation with National Geographic. Geotourism promotes preservation of the cultural, historical and natural resources that draw people to a region. Sponsored by the Lyndhurst and Benwood foundations and Plan East Tennessee, the Aug. 16 conference at the Chattanooga Marriott Downtown will explore ways to enhance sustainable travel and business practices. The all-day event will feature a variety of speakers, including Dan Austin, director of Austin-Lehman Adventures, a company specializing in worldwide adventure travel.
