The gun push is on again in Tennessee

Gun money is running rampant in Tennessee.

From billboards here to the General Assembly in Nashville, gun and ammunition supporters are clearly spending some bucks to whip up more fear and sell more guns and ammo.

When they use a photo of the master of haters, Adolf Hitler, along with a made-up quote on a U.S. Highway 27 billboard, you know they've pulled out all the stops.

Like three-quarters of the incendiary email pass-along messages that float through inboxes every day, the quote about Hitler praising Germany for adopting the first ever gun registration program is probably not even real.

"Hitler's infamous quote ... is probably a fraud and likely never uttered," said Bernard Harcourt, chairman of the department of political science at the University of Chicago in 2004.

But that's not all. There's also Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, who this week said Tennessee's new gun law allowing handgun carry-permit holders to keep weapons in their vehicles needs tweaking.

It seems the state's attorney general "muddied the waters" when he ruled the new statute would have no impact on employers ability to fire workers who violated company policy by having guns in the company parking lot, Ramsey said.

Ramsey says he "probably" would support an anticipated push to clarify the statute in the next legislative session. The expected change would be to stipulate that an employer could not fire a carry-permit holder solely for having a handgun in a locked vehicle.

If they do this, Ramsey and the bill's supporters would be turning a deaf ear to the University of Tennessee, the Tennessee Board of Regents, and numerous other large employers in the state.

Why? Because gun money is important in Tennessee, and gun groups like the National Rifle Association make no secret about supporting or opposing politicians depending on how they vote on gun issues.

Remember the orange-haired gunman who fatally shot 12 people and wounded 58 others in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last July? That gunman, who now is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, got his 170 pounds of ammo from a Knoxville company, according to an investigative news story published last week in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Every mass shooting is followed briefly with revived talk about banning certain guns or magazines, but never the ammo stockpiles. In fact, little is ever said about where these people get their bullets.

Federal law doesn't require a background check to buy ammo, and there is no need for a license to buy or sell bullets. There are also no limits on how much ammo can be bought. Nor is there any federal requirement to keep sales records. (Although, there is a move in other states to change that.)

But in Tennessee, our lieutenant governor is pushing to loosen gun laws while restricting the rights of private business owners and all employers. If Ramsey has his way, employers soon will have no say about whether guns can be in cars parked in their parking lots.

Feel safer?

The words well and regulated catch my attention. I'd think those two words explain it. That is, a well regulated militia should be closely scrutinized, kept in check, and under government controlled. Such as a military, police force and such. And not something that anyone could establish a group, acquire firearms, wear matching clothing and call themselves a militia.*

I find it amusing that whoever put up the Hitler billboard up in Dayton wasn't educated enough to realize they misspelled his first name, nor, presumably, are aware of the real history of guns in Germany in the early/mid 1900's.

That brings us to the next point. Most of us are not anti-gun, we just worry about the lack of common sense and education of many gun owners that endanger us all. As an example, the first obligation in any "stand your ground" law ought to be to avoid confrontation at all costs as long as safety allows it. If that was in Florida's law, Zimmerman would be in jail right now, or on bail on appeal.

The writer is upset that the Colorado shooter "got his 170 pounds of ammo from a Knoxville company."

What silliness! Are we suppose to be upset also because we can buy guns and ammo? And what does that have to with the price of eggs in China anyway?

Cars are made in Tennessee, should we mention that when someone dies in a car wreck in a car made in Tennessee or when it is used in a crime?

Knives are probably made in Tennessee as well and if not can certainly be purchased in stores in Tennessee. Should the origin of the knife be noted when a crime is committed with a knife made or purchased in Tennessee?

Liberals must think everyone is dumber than a box of rocks when they try to sell their snake oil.

If you liberals do not like the gun laws in Tennessee then leave.

The gun laws in Tennessee will actually be more beneficial to the blacks population that live in the neighborhoods where most of the black on black crime is committed. The police cannot protect anyone as they arrive after the crime has been committed so we are forced to rely on ourselves for protection.

I would rather be tried by 12 then carried by 6.

Be careful who you mess with thugs because over half a million of us law abiding citizens in Tennessee are packing heat! And we are growing in numbers.

NASHVILLE — Applications for Tennessee handgun carry permits increased by more than 100 percent during the first six months of this year, a period that saw the Legislature enact new laws protecting permit holders from criminal prosecution and prohibiting public release of their names.

The state Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which issues the permits, reported Thursday that it accepted 86,334 handgun carry permit applications at driver services centers from Jan. 1 through June 30, compared with 40,503 applications accepted during the first six months of 2012 — an increase of 113 percent.

And as for you law abiding non-thugs, like Trayvon Martin, you'd best be careful, too. If any one of those good ol' gun-totin' cowboys doesn't like the cut of your jib you might find yourself on the wrong end of one of their bullets. So if you're thinking about just taking a leisurely stroll some night, or stepping out for tea and skittles, you might want to think twice. But not to worry. As long as you wear your Sunday finest and maybe even carry a Bible in one hand, everything will be okay. Ain't it good to know our streets are that much safer now, with umpteen hundred more George Zimmerman's protecting us from those thuggish Trayvon Martins on the prowl?

joneses, that gun can be a false security blanket that doesn't exist in reality. One that will become an albatross hanging around your neck with obviously nothing above to even hang a hat on. Just like you can whip out your little pea-shooter on some innocent individual going about their daily affairs, that innocent individual can just as well be packing concealed heat too. In fact, if these states are going to insist on signing these dangerous bills into law, I personally think it's only fair that potential victims of law-abiding gun nuts such as yourself be able to acquire all the skills, training and any necessary tools (guns included) to protect themselves from wackos like you.

John Henry Spooner tried to use Milwaukee's SYG and Castle Doctrine law too. Guess what? He was convicted a day or so ago of 1st degree murder in the shooting death of 13 year old Darius Simmons. Who he wrongly accused of stealing guns from his home. Guns, if he ever had any, had likely been taken away a long time ago by family members. Spooner tried to convince the jury his gunning down of an innocent 13 year old was an act of justice. Unlike Florida's jurors, Milwaukee jurors didn't buy it. So you'd better think twice before you go around thinking you can pull that little pea shooter out and shoot someone and get away with it. Some states really are more civilize and have more values in others. What worked in Florida may not work in Tennessee, and it certainly didn't work in Wisconsin.

According to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel while on the witness stand, Spooner said:

"I wouldn't call it revenge; I would call it justice," Spooner said in a courtroom filled with family members of his victim, Darius Simmons, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The remark drew audible gasps in courtroom. Darius' mother, Patricia Larry, threw up her hands and muttered, "Oh my god."

Lawmakers didn't take time to consider the nuts like you and Spooner running loose, and legally carrying a gun.

Just because I legally carry a gun for protection, and I hope I never have to use it, I am a gun nut? I have some information for you. I do not attack anyone nor do I have a desire to so why would someone need to be protected from me? My record is spotless except for a speeding ticket many years ago. Now that you know me a little better your post is foolish. Just like all liberals your only defense is personal attacks.

In your own words, joneses. Your own words. You prove yourself a nut. All real law-abiding gun owners I know would never say what you said in the above statement. If you want to be taken seriously and rational, then stop talking like a fool and acting irrational by posting senseless and crazy statements like yours. You'd appear a crazed, gun-toting nut even if you were a liberal. Party affiliation has nothing to do with it.

"Just like all liberals your only defense is personal attacks." - joneses

There is nobody that is more foolish than someone who lumps all liberals into one melting pot like you do. The ones who say stupid things like "liberalism is a disease" (that is something often spouted by the rabid righties) are the ones that I automatically regard as simpletons and I can't even begin to take them seriously. Liberals wear many stripes and have varying degrees of liberalism. Some are actually quite conservative in some ways but liberal in others. And very few have any desire for an all-out socialistic state but simply want a blend of free market principles with common sense regulation regarding the environment and consumer protections. But joneses, you have such an irrational hatred for even the very word liberal that you don't make any sense at all.

Liberalism gave us civil rights, women's rights, an end to child labor, worker safety and protection laws, a 40-hour work week, time off for vacation with pay, social security and Medicare (most Americans consider those last two very good things whether you acknowledge it or not), the interstate highway system, the space program, the GI Bill, food safety laws, clean air and water, the Peace Corps, and on and on and on. Conservatives in their day fought tooth and nail against practically every one of those programs, policies, and initiatives. Only after such liberal policies become the status quo and so engrained in our way of life do conservatives finally accept them. But today's conservatives have become so unhinged that they want not only to block anything that smacks of progressivism going forward, they want to undo as much of today's "evil" liberalism as they can and take us farther and farther back to the "glory" days of the robber barons.

Joneses, you're a joke. And not the funny kind. If you consider that a personal attack, well, I guess that's just what we libs do, eh? But as long as lies and bullsh!t keep coming out of the mouths of nitwits like you, we'll just keep attacking.

Rickeroo,

What do you liberals want to move us forward to? By the way grow up while you think of your dishonest response. I know it will be dishonest because if you tell the truth you will confirm what we Americans already know about your beliefs. Why has hussein obama never said what his end result is when he says he wants to move the country forward? if he did he would not be occupying the White House.

Retired Minnesota state worker, Byron Smith another legalized gun-toting nut in overdrive (overkill too).

"According to the charges, Smith told investigators he shot Brady as he walked down the stairs, then shot him again in the face as he lay on the floor looking at him. "I want him dead," Smith told police. Smith said he sat down in a chair when Kifer started walking down the steps. Smith shot her and she also fell down the stairs. He tried to shoot her a second time, but his rifle jammed. When the gun jammed, Kifer laughed at him, fueling his anger. "If you're trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again," he told police. Smith told police he then shot Kifer "more times than I needed to" in the chest, leaving her gasping for air. He ended her suffering with a "good, clean finishing shot" under her chin. "Smith acknowledged leaving the bodies in his home overnight before calling a neighbor to ask about a lawyer and to request that authorities be notified," the Strib reports.

Charges have been upgraded from 2nd degree murder to First Degree murder.

Minnesota doesn't have a Stand Your Ground law, but it does has a Castle Doctrine that is just as insane, more so even when you read what the doctrine actually say.

What do we liberals want to move us forward to? That's easy. We want to get us out of this deep dark funk and malaise that conservatives have had us mired in for the past 30 years, ever since Ronne Reagan came on the scene and planted the seed in the feeble minds of you righties that "government is the problem." You guys have clung to that infamous statement of his and made a mantra out of it, such that you actually believe our government to be not only a useless entity but an evil one. The problem with government is not that it is intrinsically evil but that we have allowed it to become horribly lopsided, in favor of big business and the super rich and their special interests. We want there to be true campaign finance reform, put an end to the power of the lobbyists, and move us forward by restoring balance to our government, like it was originally intended, so that our elected representatives work for ALL the people, not just those who have the money to buy their favors.

We want to put an end to the senseless mindset that a government that provides health care, education, and a basic standard of living for all citizens is a "nanny state." It's not a nanny state for a government to be pro-active in enabling its citizens to live happy, productive lives, especially when its citizens are contributing to the nation's overall productivity. Nobody in a country as rich as ours should starve or go without a roof over their heads or suffer or die prematurely because health insurance is too expensive or inaccessible.

We want to end our imperialistic, arrogant, destructive foreign policy of pre-emptive war and focus our money, time, and resources in rebuilding our infrastructure, engaging in more and better funded research and development, and aggressively pursuing all facets of renewable energy, which is without a doubt going to be the energy of the future. The sooner we wean ourselves off of carbon based energy sources the sooner we will reap the rewards of clean and, what in time will become, much cheaper and more abundant renewable energy. In other words we want true energy independence. Carbon based fuels are a dinosaur, doomed to extinction. We are being fools to try to keep expanding and depending on them.

There are other things but that's a start for now. I know that you and most righties completely disagree and think that anything that smacks of socialism is evil and "un-American." So be it. We will never have a meeting of the minds on what direction we think the country should go. As far as I'm concerned everything that could possibly be said has already been said by both sides and by those in the middle. More talk is useless. I say let's secede from each other. You government hating/gun loving/Bible thumping laissez-faire capitalists go your way and we liberals will go ours. Let's divide us right down the middle and let every person decide what side they want. Either that....or let the revolution begin.
