Davis Tull of UTC

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior defensive end Davis Tull was named to the Phil Steele College Football Preview All-America first team, released Tuesday, and four other Mocs made the third team. The 2012 Southern Conference defensive player of the year, Tull was a consensus All-American last season and has been a consensus preseason first-team pick. On the Steele third team are senior linebacker Wes Dothard, a two-time All-American, junior tight end Faysal Shafaat, senior safety D.J. Key and senior cornerback Kadeem Wise. Five Mocs -- Tull, Dothard, Wise, Key and senior defensive tackle Derrick Lott -- made Steele's All-SoCon first-team defense. Shafaat made the first-team offense, senior Kevin Revis made the second-team offense and junior Nick Pollard made the second team as a punter and kicker.

• UTC's Sept. 7 game at Georgia State will be broadcast on ESPN3.com, part of the Sun Belt Conference's online package. The game is one of four the Mocs will play on ESPN3.com this season.

Baseball/Softball

• Chattanooga has two Department of Youth and Family Development baseball teams and a softball team going to RBI regional play in St. Louis the next two weekends. The baseball teams are in the 16-18 and 13-15 age groups; the softball team includes ages 13-18 girls. One of the city's other youth baseball teams, the 7-8 Carver Tigers, will play in the upcoming Dizzy Dean World Series for its age group in Southhaven, Miss.

Diving

• Eva Binder and Natalie Smallen from the Baylor Diving Club will participate in the 2013 AAU Diving National Championship next week in San Antonio, Texas. They qualified for the 1-meter competition Tuesday and the 3-meter event Wednesday. Binder is 12, Smallen 9.

• The Chattanooga Area Diving League Championship is set for Friday at the Signal Mountain town pool, beginning at 10 a.m.

Golf

• Trevor Potts has resigned as head golf coach at Covenant College after two years on the job. He wants to pursue other opportunities in the golf profession, according to a school release Tuesday, and he recently took a full-time position as assistant professional at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. A former Covenant golfer, he also has interest in a pro playing career. "We are really happy for Trevor," athletic director Kyle Taylor said. "The opportunity to be an assistant pro at a quality golf club is a great steppingstone for Trevor on his professional track. He will be sorely missed in the athletic department at Covenant College, and in the golf program. He has led both our golf programs well for the past two years." Two Scots golfers qualified for the Christian college national tournament this past school year. "I want to thank Covenant College for allowing me to have this opportunity to coach at a great school and golf program," Potts said. "Coaching at Covenant has been a great opportunity to give back to the experience that I was ablt to have while attending Covenant."

Softball

• Ooltewah High School graduate Calli Cross was a recent signee for the Tennessee Wesleyan College softball program. A starting second baseman for Bradley Central as a freshman, she played third the last two seasons for the Lady Owls, after sitting out a transfer year, and former Ooltewah coach Norma Nelson noted that she also played shortstop in summer ball and "can play about anywhere, really." Partly for that reason, "I think she'll be a good fit for Wesleyan," Nelson said. "She loves the game, and whatever she's doing she's very competitive at it. She has good ball sense, and she's a good baserunner." Previous TWC softball signees this offseason included versatile Jessica Gallihar from South Greene High in Greeneville, outfielder Danielle Saltz from Volunteer High in Church Hill, catcher and third baseman Jackie Loyd from David Crockett High in Telford and middle infielder Haley Fugate and pitcher-outfielder Faith Forgey from Bledsoe County. Forgey had a 26-8 pitching record for the Lady Warriors, and she and Fugate combined for 202 hits, 53 home runs, 52 doubles, 17 triples and 169 RBIs during their careers at the Pikeville school, according to the TWC website. Bledsoe went 21-7 this past season.

Baseball

• Cory Edgemon and Noah Hill each had two hits Tuesday, Edgemon with an RBI and Hill with a run scored, as the Chattanooga Cyclones rallied to edge the East Cobb Indians 3-2 and rise to 4-1 in the Perfect Game World Wood Bat 16-under National baseball tournament. Caleb Collins and Aaron Granger each pitched three innings for the Cyclones, Granger getting the win, and Cade Evans had an RBI hit.
