Vann House Days coming up
SPRING PLACE, Ga. - The annual Vann House Days festival will take place Saturday at the state historic site in Spring Place with home tours and living history demonstrations of arts and crafts of the 1800s.
A news release said that quilting, carding and spinning were the first crafts included in Vann House Days and will be featured again this year. Weaving on the 175-year-old-loom shows how people on the frontier made their clothing.
Other domestic crafts and a demonstrations of black powder shooting also will take place. Special guests include Cherokee artist Billy Mac Steele and Comanche author Ron Cooper, who will be signing his book, "It's My Trail, Too."
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and $4 for youths 6-18. For more information, call 706-695-2598.
Mowing crews at work in region
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Work crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation will be at work today through Thursday on several North Georgia highways. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weather permitting. Locations this week are:
Dade County: State Route 157 and SR 189
Walker County: SR 157
Whitfield County: SR 3 and SR 201.
Motorists are asked to use extra caution when workers are present.
Teenager falls 16 stories to his death
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Police said an 18-year-old Louisiana man has died after falling 16 stories from a condominium balcony in coastal Alabama.
Authorities said a security guard found Challenge Talbot in a swimming pool at Turquoise Place after he fell from a balcony Sunday morning.
Police say no one witnessed the fall.
State museum plans stall
ATLANTA - State officials have let a former Coca-Cola building in downtown Atlanta sit empty after buying it for $1.1 million instead of following through on plans to turn it into a state history museum.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday that the General Assembly has killed funding to start work twice since the state bought the property six years ago.
The newspaper reported lawmakers allocated minimal funding to preserve the building near Underground Atlanta.
Tennessee woman killed in hit, run
FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. - Investigators say they have charged James Bloodworth II, 36, with hit and run in a wreck that killed a woman riding on a golf cart.
Authorities said Janice Patterson, 75, died and three other people on the cart were hurt. Patterson was from Johnson City, Tenn., and was visiting family.
