about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

For a blooming week, we have had discussions about many issues like crimes committed by those who are black, comparisons of percentages of black prisoners to those who are white, race-baiting, racial profiling based on what someone is wearing, all the way to blaming the President for comments that he has offered.

People...wake up. Problems that surround the continued struggle for racial equality and harmony are not problems that people are making up. They are real, they are still ongoing, and although this country has made some wonderful strides, more effort is needed to realize more equality and harmony by EVERYONE.

This cartoon has to do with the perceptions way too many people have whenever they encounter those of another race, and black people have as much work to do in that department as whites do.

Inclusion has been forced upon the whites in this country and there are very little, if any, exceptions. There are many examples of exclusion by institutions that cater to or only include those who are black. An all white institution of higher learning is taboo, while there are still several historically black colleges that only allow black students in attendance.

Churches are still highly segregated. Housing, especially for the poor, have pockets of high segregation. There are 100% black beauty pageants.

Racial divide is not all the blame of the current white majority. Mistrust, negative attitudes, prejudice, and even unjustified hate exists by many people of all races. We as a nation, have come a long way in 49 years, but we're not where we need to be yet.

The finger pointing needs to stop. Everyone needs to look within themselves to find ways to overcome their negative views when if comes to race.

It is unrealistic to believe that there will ever be an end to any and all racial bias. People are always going to have differences in terms of how they look, how they dress, even as to how the style their hair.

If we were all supposed to be equal in all respects, God or nature, depending on ones belief, would have designed us all to be the same. Think how boring that would be.

I am a people person. I like meeting people I have never met. I like talking to people. I have met many people over the years. Until a few years ago, I traveled extensively the entire United States. I have been through all 50 States. I have been to some of the wealthiest areas of the country, and I've been in several ghetto's too.

I constantly have to resist the temptation to judge people upon first glance. So many times, if allowed to engage in conversation with someone who at first glance I thought to be an undesirable person, I have mentally kicked myself for prejudging them.

Whatever faults that percentages of people who fall into certain classes may have, we all are individuals first and everyone deserves to be sized up accordingly.

And that's the way that race relations gradually improve.

One person at a time.

Is such a charge really all that pathetic?

How many past Presidents have ever been called a "ni**er?"

If I had a dollar for every time I have heard that word used to describe the President, I would absolutely be set for life.

How many past Presidents have been accused of anywhere near the number of conspiracies that our current President has been accused of? There are people who literally believe that he will crown himself King before 2016.

Barack Obama exemplifies the example and proof that any one born in this country can become the President of the United States, and yet, the man cannot go one week without public condemnation by another public person for something he said, for something he failed to say, for something he did, or for something he failed to do.

The right-wing posters who regularly participate in this sand-box love to believe that they have respect and admiration for anyone who works their way to success, but their admiration for successful people often comes to a screeching halt, if their skin color is dark.

How many of you have attacked elected black politicians for lacking any ability to govern, especially and exclusively if they had a (D) next to their name? There certainly is a very short list of black politicians that some of you do claim to admire, but every single one of them has an (R) following their name.

Anyone who is not on board with conservative principals all the way, are considered outcasts in the eyes of most right-wingers.

In a couple of weeks, President Barack Hussein Obama will have been born 52 years ago, the son of parents who both were from different countries, different cultures, and yes, different skin colors.

Had they lived in this area, one or both might have been hanged from the nearest tree.

That half-white, half-black child is now the President of the United States. He has been successful his entire adult life. He dresses very scholarly. He is educated. He speaks clearly. He exemplifies what any American can become with effort and determination.

Why some of you cannot celebrate his success once in awhile, and why you must tear the man to shreds consistently, is beyond any and all comprehension.

I deal with all of this negativity with the full understanding that nothing you write about the man will ever hurt him. Regardless of your opinions, the man has achieved the highest level of success, and much more so, than any of you bashers will ever, ever begin to achieve.

Fear is indeed a powerful emotion. Fear is often a highly irrational emotion. Irrational emotion is why those who have always demeaned President Obama, continue to do so.

God help us all if the next elected President is a woman. The right-wingers are going to pop a vein a week.

They were arrested, immediately. It took over 40+ days for Sanford police to arrest Zimmerman. Even then, it was done with great reluctance on their part. Sanford police chief stated on camera there would not be any arrest and the case would be closed. That's what triggered the outcry. They were willing to let the killer of a child walk free.

I've never heard of Marley Lion. Had to look it up.

What agenda is it that you think I have? Do you really think I don't care that bad things happen to good people?

We could sit here day in and day out, souring the web for stories of crime committed by people of all races, but what would any of it prove?

There is a distinct difference between what happened to the killers in the Marley Lion case and others that have been cited.

If those killers were black, they were immediately arrested, jailed without bond, and brought to justice. That did not happen in George Zimmerman's case, which is why people were and continue to be ticked off.

There is no agenda in pointing out that there are often two very different standards applied when a murder victim is black. There are numbers and statistics to back it up.

"The difference between Marley and Trayvon is Marley was sitting in his car resting not beating another person."

There are many differences between the two killings, mainly that the perpetrators left the scene, were caught, arrested and are still in jail, and will be standing trial.

The chief complaint by those who are making comparisons, is the fact that Marley Lion's killing did not make parts of the national news, UNTIL someone blogged that comparison photo.

"Not worthy of any race baiters comments. I believe this happened june 16 2012."

Don't blame me for that which I have had no knowledge about. Marley Lion's murder is JUST NOW making it's way around the web. Tell me honestly, when did you learn about it?

Your beotch is with the national media, not me.

He's not a racist, never has been one, and has done nothing to deserve being called that. The ludicrous overreaching to label him a "white hispanic" just to contort it into a racial issue is hilarious.

THE most shocking, tragic, and heartbreaking issue of all of is not what you lefties want to focus on, but it's the self-destructive nature of the "black community" and it's black on black violence.

The media and "black leaders", not to mention morons on the left, have there heads up their collective a$$es and would rather create a "get whitey" situation than haver a real dialogue.

There will always discrimination, but that shouldn't be confused with profiling based on facts and experience.

Alprova said...while there are still several historically black colleges that only allow black students in attendance.

While I respect your postings al, they are all very thought provoking, the above is not true. A white person can attend a traditionally black college tuition free.

There's no black institution of higher learning, business etc. that ever had signs up that said "blacks only allowed." Can't say the same for white colleges, white businesses. Long before intergration whites freely maneuvered around in black areas of towns, attending black establishments such as nightclubs, restaurants. Openly dating black women, black men without the stigma attached they'd get if it was known in their own worlds. They just couldn't let it be known in their white communities. Whites, Jews owned businesses in black communities, but blacks couldn't own a business in white communities. The original founder, Roy McDonald, (my family and his date way back) of this newspaper got his start owning a grocery store in a black community. That's how many whites obtained their wealth back in the day. Opening up businesses in black communities.

We hear a lot about the Lynching of Ed Johnson on the Walnut Street bridge and the Scottsboro Boys. Both falsely accused of raping a white woman. What we don't know about are the many other similar stories like them that happened right here in Chattanooga.

There's the case of a young man who was dating a white woman at a time when such unions were taboo, even illegal. Most all the white and Jewish business owners who owned a business in the black community where they openly dated knew about the relationship. They were making out in an area on the southside once known as Pinetop(the name may have changed over the years/now there's a small shopping center), when the white girlfriend thought she'd been spotted by some of her friends and neighbors. The white girlfriend shouted rape. Her black boyfriend was arrested, convicted and sent to prison although many of those Jewish and white business owners went to court to speak up on his behalf. He died in prison. He was a distant cousin of mine. I'd heard whispered rumors about the story over the years, but only in later years did I learn more details.

That's not even close to being true, but it sure sounds true. A handful of crimes go national per year. They often rise to the level of being a little more than heinous before they are picked up.

"I didn't see this either that is why it ticks me off, the MSM are baiters so this didn't fit the agenda."

I don't see it that way, but...

"The reason I mentioned this to you is , You are so hell bent on this Zimmerman thing."

I have all but stopped any mention of the case. It is indeed history now. I don't expect any more criminal proceedings to be filed against him. Whatever the truth is, that's between him and God, when the time comes.

"That boy like Trayvon didn't deserve to die but because he was white the left didn't care about him."

That's a truly unfounded charge. Did Fox News make any mention of the killing? Did anyone run across the case on the Drudge Report? How 'bout any of the other right-wing, conservative sites?

No...it popped up within the last day, as a means by which to attempt to make the same point you are attempting to make today.

How many people who turn up missing who are white garner more national attention, on average, than those who are black, Hispanic, or Asian?

Any charges of bias in media can and does go both ways. It just depends on what it pertains to.

Most Americans are half one thing/half another. Especially in the south, and especially if your family dates back to the slave period. However, American standards on race are: he's black because that's how white America see him. Physical characteristics dictates ones race in America, and not what race your parents are, and that one drop rule still apply, albeit overtly and subconsciously. That's why he's the first president to have received more death threats than any president before him. Even the Bush.

Years ago a group of KKK came to Chattanooga to spew their racist venom. It was easy to see the negroid bloodlines in their physical features, and they all thought they were pure white. It was quite pathetic and funny to see them all up there shouting WHITE POWER!! Not realizing just how much black some had in them. I still crack up with laughter when I remember that scene. SLMAO!!

It certainly doesn’t fit the mainstream narrative does it?

Central to the debate is the following Key sentence:

”When whites mistreat people of color - it’s always racism. But when whites are victims, we must step back. We must look deeper for the root causes of said mistreatment; a glaring double standard!”

It will be interesting to read how his questions, and the answers, will be refuted. I have a feeling it will not be watched by those harboring preconceived opinions, being dishonestly judgmental; and thus dismissed out of hand as being racially bias.

Lissen (sic) Clay . . .

There was a time I remember where white racists went around shooting, lynching and terrorizing black people. It has been a LONG time since those things went on. They were horrible, but the world has changed.

Now, it's white people who fear the black gangs, home invasions, armed robberies by black men, and all the other anti-social things which they have chosen to do with their "freedom."

The African American dialogue seems to be that they should be allowed to act any way they want, and the rest of us are supposed to accept it without forming an opinion. Sorry, no deal.

People are free to do what they want as long as they are not harming someone else or violating a law, and if the African American children want to be like Trayvon, they have that right until they, also, break into houses and steal jewelry while the residents are at work. That's why Zimmerman was out on patrol.

White people have a right to fear crime as long as the African American community allows its children to grow up to become hoodlums. They steal from each other, and they steal from us.

Oh, and some white kids do it too. They are just as bad. A white kid doing what Trayvon did would have looked just as suspicious. A white kid who attacked Zimmerman would be just as dead.

People tend to associate with others who have the same values, beliefs, and preferences. School and work are places where people tend to have to get along together. The neighborhood is the place where the differences are cultivated.

Look at the map in your own newspaper which documents the locations of shootings in Chattanooga, and that's your problem. Make all those markers go away in the years to come, and then maybe we'll have a chance to accept African Americans as people who do not regularly pose a threat to our lives and property.

Chet123,

I spent most of my working career around military and federal government agencies, and what I saw there was that the SMALL number of African Americans who committed crimes or caused problems was about the same as the number of whites who caused problems. I worked with African Americans as my peers, and in some cases, my superiors, and I cannot find a reason to complain about any of them in comparison to the white counterparts.

Poor whites and poor blacks commit crimes. Crime should probably be related to economic situations for "statistical" comparison, rather than to race. I lived for a few years in a Rocky Mountain state, in a very rural area, and the thieves and junkies and drug pushers were poor whites. Too cold up there to attract many black people, I guess.

So, yeah, it's an economic issue more than a racial issue, but all the give-away and job training programs since back in John F. Kennedy's days have not seemed to make an impact on economic deprivation. My take on it is that more whites and more people of color have fallen down the scale that was intended to raise black people up.

Mothers and fathers have to raise children to know right from wrong, and to get an education, and to have a better life. If that's "being white," then what do you propose in its place?

And, by the way, the idea of sending a black man to jail for 15 years for stealing a loaf of bread is something that only tells me he had committed earlier crimes which resulted in a harsher punishment for a petty crime. Would you believe that I would NEVER consider stealing a loaf of bread? I was raised to know that stealing is WRONG. I was raised to work for what I get. So were a lot of the people who are in jail for stealing. It's a CHOICE. The fact that I have more than someone else is a function of the fact that I worked and saved to get it. The fact that I have less than someone else is that I made choices which put me in a position to earn less, but to enjoy what I did for a living. It's all about choice for everyone, black or white.

When you try to justify something by saying that whites get away with crimes that blacks go to jail for, it falls on deaf ears. We do not have a right to commit crimes against other people, period.

A portion of the African American population seems to think that it's okay to ignore the laws, and they do. So do some white Americans. Those people should expect to get in trouble when they act outside the law. I am with you 100% if you want to send more white people to jail. I can think of a few right now who deserve to be in there. (continued)

chet says....BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT BEEN AROUND BLACK PEOPLE......WE HAVE OUR UNDER-CLASS JUST AS YOU HAVE YOUR UNDER-CLASS....THE DIFFERECE IS THE MEDIA HIDE YOUR UNDER-CLASS...WHEREAS WITH BLACK AMERICA THEY PLACE THEM ON THE FRONT PAGE......

This is a good observation. When folks leave the suburbs and go to work in the city they drive past many run down areas and they see a snapshot of street life through a preconceived lens. A reaffirmation of their world view which is poor urban blacks. But what doesn't happen everyday is that these same people do not drive trough the trailer parks and see the poor whites sittin on their porches with their kids. So the urban poor are more visible to the suburbanites than the rural poor which reinforces the stereotypes when comparisons are made. Now no one on here is telling me I'm responsible for cleaning up the white community so how can you demand that a black person do something to educate/change the social standing of another black? Also in a rural community it is rare to see a police officer on a daily basis where in the city there is one patrolling at all times. I see them several times a day sittin on my porch but when i'm outside the city you only see them when you call for them. So inside the city you have a much greater chance of being stopped which leads to higher incarceration rates in an urban setting. It is simply playing the odds. Now add in the mistrust of the police in an urban setting coupled with the attitude presented to the police from a frustrated populace and you get two completely different outlooks pertaining to our justice system and the communities as a whole

My grandfather taught me to always come to a complete stop at a stop sign. He said that you can roll through a stop sign 100 times and never get in trouble, but one of those times, a cop will see you do it, and give you a ticket. It's exactly the same with everything else in life. If you ignore the law and think it's okay to act any way you want, one of those times you'll probably end up in trouble for it. Lawlessness becomes a habit, and eventually the result is that you end up getting caught and prosecuted for something.

The solution to African American poverty has got to come from the African American community. Opportunity is there for those who will take it. It may take two generations to go from sharecropping to engineering school for the grandson of a black man, but guess what? That's what it took for ME to get into engineering school as the grandson of a sharecropper. It takes hard work, and courage.

So, what do YOU plan to do to make it better? The African American community in Chattanooga seems to have missed the boat over the past 50 years, so how do we change that? Honest adults can work together and make things better, but I'm not going to run out and knock over a liquor store if things don't work out for me. How do you change that part of the problem?

July 23, 2013 at 1:09 p.m.

This cartoon is as stupid, and may have been inspired by, the shockingly stupid apology Chris Mathews offered for "all white people" for the GZ verdict.

Why doesn't Jesse Jackass apologize for the OJ verdict? The whole thing is insane. Chris Mathews idiotic apology typifies the moronic way the left handles dialogue regarding race.

July 23, 2013 at 1:28 p.m.

All white people think the same, all black people really try and have a diaglogue, but scared white people don't know how to do it? Is that the point of this cartoon?

I suppose TM was trying to have a dialogue when he pounded GZ to the curb and sat on him and punched him? He was letting his fist do the talking. Or, how about that group of black men who went on random hammer attacks in New York City yesterday, were they simply expressing them selves? Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackass add nothing to the dialogue, they only blame whitey and lump all white people into on big category. They play on the ignorant and poorly educated in the "black community".

From: Frontline PBS org:

"Is There Racial Bias in “Stand Your Ground” Laws?"

Since Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, invoked the stand-your-ground defense, these laws have been defended by gun rights groups for empowering civilians. They’ve also been criticized by civil rights groups for encouraging violence and being racially biased.

A recent study suggests that laws may lead to more deaths. According to a June study [pdf] by researchers at Texas A&M University, the rates of murder and non-negligent manslaughter increased by 8 percent in states with Stand Your Ground laws. That’s an additional 600 homicides per year in the states that have enacted such laws.

Whites who kill blacks in Stand Your Ground states are far more likely to be found justified in their killings. In non-Stand Your Ground states, whites are 250 percent more likely to be found justified in killing a black person than a white person who kills another white person; in Stand Your Ground states, that number jumps to 354 percent.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/criminal-justice/is-there-racial-bias-in-stand-your-ground-laws/

Now, I've read on many forums discussions surrounding this topic that continue to say Zimmerman's attorneys didn't use Forida's SYG as a defense. That's not true. Florida's SYG law has very much been indoctrinated into all such self-defense laws on their books. And the law was used during the Zimmerman trial. Therefore, Florida's SYG law was very much a part of this trial and helped to insure it's outcome of a not guilty verdict. It's in the judges own wordings to the jury when you them instructions. She specifically said Zimmerman had no duty to retreat. On the other hand she implied Martin had every duty to retreat. She placed the sole duty and responsibility on the shoulders of a barely 17 year old child being stalked by a stranger adult, who could have very well turned out to be a sexual predator, pedophile, mugger, gang-banger. There's something tragically wrong about that, and something gone tragically wrong about this nation and its lack of a moral compass.

prairie_dog said... Lissen (sic) Clay . . . There was a time I remember where white racists went around shooting, lynching and terrorizing black people. It has been a LONG time since those things went on. They were horrible, but the world has changed

That's the problem, prairie_dog. Things haven't changed, they just took on a new and different face. Remember, people basically said the same thing during those darker lynching and raiding periods, chasing black people from their homes and communities. They pretty much said, "Well, at least you're not a slave anymore. So things must be better." When people are in the mist and living it, even taking part in it, they don't always see things for what they are. It usually take future generations looking back, and a change in minds and attitudes, for it to be realized the horrible things man is capable of doing to man. Even then, they won't recognize the horrors being committed in the present sense. Sometimes right before their eyes. It may take another fifty, sixty years, and a change in laws and attitudes, for the true travesty of justice created in the Martin/Zimmerman case. Future generations will bear the burden and shame of today's unjust laws. And the cycle will continue, because man is incapable or just too selfish to recognize and correct present injustices as they happen. The laws often dictate whether a nation is morally just or not and define how its people interact and react to one another. Hermann Goering was right in that sense. When he suggested the masses can be convinced to go along with evil. Even the ones in the beginning who protest will eventually come around/ kicking, screaming and protesting all the way. The masses will come around to take part in and support the biddings and bear the blame of the powerful. As the powerful will never want the image of having innocent blood on their own hands. They leave that all up to the grunts in society.

Below is an article that is supposedly a blunt statement on race, race relations, and the condition of the Black community in America. But is it what it appears or is it in fact a preview of what awaits American culture in total? Does it describe a cultural cancer eating away at the very heart of a once great country?

The Black communities of our country, even though they had the evil legacies of slavery and Jim Crow, once appeared to be among the strongest and most stable. However there was much unseen damage unlying those communities due to those legacies. As a result when the disease began to seriously consume us they were the most vulnerable to its attack and the first to be affected.

The Non-Black communities including White, Brown, Red, or Yellow should not look at the dysfunctions in the Black community and feel any comfort that those pathologies are localized there as they are not. Each in turn will probably fall before this disease according to their weaknesses of the will to resist.

There are possibly as many claimed causes for this cancer as there are people wanting to comment on it. There is something that can not be denied and that is the symptoms and end stage results if we don’t find the cause(s) and cure it or them.

By Ben Stein:

I had a tough time sleeping last night. The Trayvon Martin case is worrying me.

First of all, the media have made this case into the lynching of Zimmerman supposedly because he murdered an innocent sweet little black child. The media have been telling a fairy tale designed to whip up race hatred.

It horrifies me that the media has tried to turn this sad case into an occasion to make black people hate white people. It horrifies me that Mr. Obama has joined in. His assertion that he could have been Martin is breathtakingly dishonest.

The black community in this nation is in crisis. It has a disastrous situation in terms of education, lack of work habits, complete collapse of the family, wild overuse of drugs, violence, and generally behavior that is destructive to itself and far too many other people.

Obviously, this applies only to some black people. I work every day and you work every day with black people who are in fine shape, much better shape than I am in.

The least of the problems that black people face in the USA right now is attacks by heavy set volunteer watchmen in gated communities. There is real anarchy in many parts of the black community in the USA. For Mr. Obama and others to act as if the real problem is white people locking their car doors at stop lights when black people approach them is just plain poppycock. The black community is not in danger from white people: it is in danger from itself.

The number of black kids killed by white people is minute — although any is too many. The number of black kids killed by the Crips and the Bloods and the Black P-Stone Rangers is enormous. Why no rallies led by “black leaders” against the Crips and the Bloods? The number of black kids whose lives have been ruined by irresponsible parents is immense. Why no rallies against crack-smoking moms and dads?

White people have pretty much given up racism as a factor in their lives. They have to worry about jobs and education and families. Thus, there are none, not any major white leaders of any kind whose stock in trade is whipping up race hatred. That movement simply does not exist.

But among “black leaders,” who really can no longer make credible claims about racism now that we have a black President, who really have no answers to the crisis in the black community, a chance to distract people from their own powerlessness is a golden opportunity.

Among the liberal media, who have really been missing someone to hate for a long time, the Zimmerman case is heaven-sent.

It’s distressing. Black people have a brutally painful history of suffering in this country. It is a shameful story. It is in the past as far as being caused by white people as a day by day matter. It definitely is not in the past in the black consciousness. They have every reason to feel angry about it. But things have gotten so incredibly, unbelievably better in the last generations in terms of white attitudes that to seek to whip up old animosities while ignoring the present catastrophe in the black community is a disgraceful distraction by the President and “black leaders.”

We have real problems in America. We cannot pretend they will go away if we focus on sad, even tragic, peripheral events. Yes, one Trayvon Martin death is one too many. Thousands of deaths of blacks from black violence and drugs are in a different world of hurt.

Race has always been the main problem in America, at least since World War II. We had a spectacular triumph in ridding ourselves of white racism at all but the most trivial levels. For the President and Eric Holder and the liberal media and the “black leaders” to turn up the heat under a new evil cauldron of racism is terrifying.

I am terribly worried about the problems of black America and by the cheap racist shots of far too many people who should know better.

The problem is your little commentary wants to make the above unique to only the black community. It is not. All the things you listed, especially overuse of drugs, are rampant in the white community, more so than the black one___ especially poor whites and even more so in middle classed and up white America. Do you really think all those drug treatment centers sprung up all across the nation on the behalf of black drug abusers? Surely you jest.

The black violence in communities can at least in part be explained. Especially in the inner cities. It is a byproduct of the plans to gentrify the inner cities to make way for all those who fled the core of the cities during the 1960s and seventies to return. They were meant to be all cleaned out and gone. But you can't move people, even the poor and minority poor, around like checkers on a checker board in an effort to force them out.

Mass incarceration of primarily blacks for minor offenses have decimated black communities and families all across America. Especially so during the crack-cocaine craze. The practice broke up families and forced remaining families into that social system so many hold in disdain, when that primary bread winner is removed from the home. The proof of that is how laws began to change when the focused changed to white drug users, especially meth users. Suddenly the system developed drug courts and referrals for treatment in lieu of jail and prison time. Where meth was considered the drug choice of many whites, even creeped into middle classed white America, crack-cocaine was considered the drug choice of inner-city poor black. That's what created the disparity in sentencing. Although meth is much more potent than crack, and there's actually no cure for meth users. Severe meth users can only be treated with anti-psychotic drugs in an effort to help drive down the cravings for the drugs. Unlike crack-cocaine, meth users will always crave the drug. Also, meth users are far more like to use other drugs such as crack-cocaine or any drugs if they can't get to the meth. Where crack users aren't as likely to turn to meth. But the system went after inner-city poor, because that's where all the funding was allocated. Plus it can be very expensive to go after meth users. As meth destroys everything. From the house it's cooked and used in, to the children that's around it. Children in homes where meth is cooked and used must be taken to hospitals and decontaminated. Plus, meth explodes, and have burned down homes and burned up the cookers, sometimes along with the children inside the homes where it's cooked.

Nothing has decimated the black family in America more so than America's prison industrial complex. When those same strategies used in poor black communities are applied to white communities those white communities began to deteriorate, disintegrate and shatter at a rate much more quicker than it took to bring down black communities. When that was realized they began to modify the laws or at least how they're enforced. But disparities still remain pretty much the same when depending on the race of the individual.

Restructure and reform America's policing, policies and how they've been allowed to go into these communities and pretty much do as they please, and these communities will begin to heal and uplift themselves. When something as simple as walking down the street or going to visit a neighbor two doors down can get an innocent person thrown to the ground; when a simple traffic stop can lead to a strip search in public on the side of road over time that takes a toll on the human psych. When humans are stripped of their dignity and broken down to the least common denominator, there's no way to predict what's going to emerge. Whites often project theirs outwardly, by shooting up schools, murder-suicides, going postal on the jobs. Blacks and others turn theirs inward or outward on one another. But the devastating outcome remains basically the same for both. Destroyed lives, destroyed communities and neighborhoods, and a destroyed nation.

Be that as it may, there are 106 universities and colleges that are identified as "Historically Black," and that were created to serve blacks first and foremost.

The point I'm making, is that there is a double standard that people have good reason to be critical about. No institution that I am aware of identifies itself as a "Historically White" institution of higher learning, and if it did, I'm sure that there would be court challenges to change that distinction.

"Can't say the same for white colleges, white businesses. Long before intergration whites freely maneuvered around in black areas of towns, attending black establishments such as nightclubs, restaurants."

Let's try to stick to the year 2013, or are you suggesting that the double standard is a payback of sorts?

My dear, the delay in the arrests was not due to the police allowing them to go free. They had no idea who the killers were.

They were arrested when the police received a tip to where the gun used in the murder could be found.

There's more than a wee bit of difference between the two cases.

Those colleges were established during a time when white colleges denied blacks entrance into their schools. Those discriminations still continued, albeit overtly, well into the 1980s and '90s when I was attending.

See: Dream Makers/Dream Breakers ... The autobiography of Justice Thurgood Marshall. There's a section in the book that went something like: ***A Mexican from Mexico could attend all white colleges in America, an Asian from Asia could attend all white colleges in America, but a black man who had toiled the soil for centuries, who helped to build America could not attend an all white college in America. Read the story of Marine Biologist Ernest Everett Just .... who for a while was run out of an all white college in America. If not for racism, it's possible America could have discovered the cure for many cancers sooner. Even back in the 1920s he was studying marine animals as a possible cure for many cancers. Later in years, perhaps 1990s, scientist came together and said basically the same thing he said back in the 1920s. They too believed marine animals possibly held the key to many forms of cancer. Ernest Everett Just left the U.S., because of its racism even back then. Moved to Paris (much more friendly towards blacks back then), married and continued his writings and studies, but also died of cancer in later years. That's what racism has done to this country. It cripples us all. It's held the nation back. It's kept America and Americans from living up to their fullest potential. How much more advanced would America have become without racism we'll never know.

That's not a double standard, Alprova. That's a byproduct of the foundation this nation was established. And once again, the nation is attempting to regress back into its old habit of separating the wheat from the chaff.

There are Russian, Italian, German, Jewish, Hispanic/Latino, Native American establishments in America too. No one ever makes a big deal of them though. The point is, black colleges aren't off limits to others. In fact, did you know any Native American Indian can attend any four year college of their choice for free? We never hear about those things, because everyone's so focus on what black people should or shouldn't be doing. Have or haven't done.

kliffnotes, just so we're clear, can you cite the percentages of people who are not black who attend colleges and universities still identified as "Historically Black?"

Understand that I personally have no problem with such institutions, but we're discussing race relations.

My feeling is that as long as there are any entities that encourage the catering to a singular race or outright exclude people of any race, mending the divide is going to be hindered.

I honestly don't see how you could arrive at such a conclusion when you take my entirety into context. It has nothing to do with any payback. Mass discrimination still goes on America. In the schools, on the jobs and in everyday life. So, it's understandable if those most affected by it still hold on to a safety net of some kind. As America appears to slip back at an alarming rate into his old habits. Why are blacks the only ones always expected to give up something in order to be accepted? No other group has been required to do so. So why blacks? They're embraced, allowed to assimilate. Where blacks have always had a history of being rejected, ostracized.

That information I do not have. But I do have white relatives who've attended all black colleges with other whites who have also attended traditionally black colleges.

Alprova said... My feeling is that as long as there are any entities that encourage the catering to a singular race or outright exclude people of any race, mending the divide is going to be hindered.

That's my point, Alprova. No one is being excluded from black colleges or other establishments. They never have been. Even when there were White Only and No Coloreds Allowed legally and telling blacks where they would not be welcome. Those things didn't take place all that long ago. It's too soon to ask people most affected to give up and all will be well. There were clothing stores in Chattanooga in the late 1960s and '70s where blacks buy clothing from the store, but they weren't allowed to try on the clothes first. Things didn't happen in Chattanooga right away the way they did in some other cities. In the 1960s, blacks still were forced to move to the back of the bus in Chattanooga, and for sure elsewhere.

I don't want to get into t tit for tat with you, Al. I honestly don't. But it's just not as simple as closing down black colleges and all will be fine, and everyone will live happily ever after. The problem is much more deeply rooted than that. Closing down black colleges wouldn't have made the Trayvon Martin tragedy not happen. It would have still happened whether there are black colleges or not. It wasn't Jim Crow/segregated south when a group of black federal agents went into a nationally well known restaurant in another state and was made to wait while other customers came in and were quickly seated. It happened in 21ST century raceblind America. Or a black female soldier, Iraqi war vet was brutally beaten outside a restaurant in Georgia(?) in front of a child by a burley white male when he almost closed a restaurant door on her child. Those things are not unique. Nor are they a rarity. But I'm not going to argue about it.

The above statement and belief are part of the problem, PT. Why is it only the Black America that needs to make changes? Why can't everyone pitch in and commit to doing their fair share, and make needed changes in their own belief system and stereotypes they've ingrained about others different than they are? Laying all the blame on the shoulders of Blacks gives others a cover to hide behind, supporting that superiority complex and continue on behind the scenes throwing a wrench into the machinery every chance they get.

Jt6,

Your pre-amble to Ben Stein’s essay contends a possible dysfunctional disease, “a cultural cancer eating away at the very heart of a once great country” is afflicting the nation and wonder if “it is what it appears, or is it in fact a preview of what awaits American culture in total”?

While nebulously defined, it is a truthful observation; and while it has a metaphorical conclusion that many will fail to grasp, it is nonetheless correct. And sadly, I must agree with your prognosis, and worry the prospects for recovery may be (are) slipping away.

Dinner table conversations at Casa Limrico often begins with exactly your words, “what's happening to us?”

So, without making this a dissertation I’ll try to point out the main components of this affliction.

We, the general population (the 99% if you will) have been souled out. Not figuratively, but literally; politically, economically, spiritually and most importantly, constitutionally. This didn’t happen overnight but moved steadily in that direction during the latter part of the 20th century. Then accelerated rapidly with the 21st. We morphed from a country of the good guys into an empire with tentacles everywhere and in everyone. The leaders we thought we could look to for answers look away in disgust at our petulance and are saying (metaphorically) ‘Talk to the hand’; while keeping the plebs occupied with diversionary hot button topics.

BUT.

More and more people a beginning to back the curtain. Still not getting any answers at all, people don’t know how to vent their frustrations. Leading to the underlying (openly more so today) seething anger and finger pointing. This I think is the cause of the “a cultural cancer eating away at the very heart of a once great country.”

The cure is a great mass upending of the established norms as they are today. With the present surveillance state and militarization of local police I’m not sure change can happen with anything less than some sort of insurrection.

The blacks hate the whites. The whites hate the blacks. We both hate the Mexicans….And everybody hates the Jews.
Or something like that.

Was sleeping with a married woman All while she was in long term care for dementia. Plus bc of the loss of money, they had to move her from Alexian to a state facility He was spending the money on trips out of the country, on business debt, and to casinos
