HOOVER, Ala. - One of Alabama's best-funded public school systems is reconsidering a plan to end school bus service.

The Hoover city school board voted Monday night to eliminate bus routes for everyone but special education students beginning in August 2014 as part of a plan to save $2.5 million annually.

But school board president Paulette Pearson tells The Birmingham News that other options are now being considered.

Pearson said she spent all day Tuesday with Superintendent Andy Craig and that he plans to present alternative options for the public to review. Pearson said those options, some of which would keep more buses running, will likely be presented at the school board's regular meeting on Aug. 12.

Hoover is located in suburban Birmingham and it's ranked among the state's leaders in per-pupil spending.

The system says overall funding is down $96.8 million over the last four years, but enrollment is increasing.

Officials have reduced spending in other areas to help make up the difference.
