Former Ringgold High School standout Alan Mocahbee of Morehead State has been named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America baseball team as well as the Ohio Valley Conference's all-freshman team. Mocahbee led Morehead in RBIs (36) and home runs (seven). "Alan had a good year and managed to finish the season strong after some midseason struggles at the plate," coach Mike McGuire said. "He is only going to get better, and we expect him to be a force in the middle of our lineup for years to come."
• Chattanooga State outfielder and designated hitter Casey Mannion was named to the NJCAA baseball All-America third team. A candidate for the Major League Baseball draft that starts today, Mannion wound up hitting .430 with nine home runs, 18 doubles, three triples and 50 RBIs while scoring 50 runs. "With a bat in his hands, he's special," Tigers coach Greg Dennis said. "In 28 years of [coaching], he's the best I have seen."
• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf and men's cross country teams each received a 2013 Public Recognition Award for having Academic Progress Rate multiyear scoress in the nation's top 10 percent. Each had a perfect 1000. The golfers also received a PRA in 2011.
• Carson-Newman radio play-by-play announcer Adam Cavalier's call of a winning 3-point basket by the Eagles' Ish Sanders from Cleveland against Lenoir-Rhyne is among the 10 semifinalists for Stretch Internet's Call of the Year, as determined by fan votes. The streaming company will cut those to five next week and announce the winner next Thursday. Three of the semifinalists involve NCAA Division I schools. The Sanders shot was fourth in votes.
• Maria Walshe and Shaliyah Geathers of East Hamilton are among the 12 East Tennessee All-Stars set to play in the Tennessee Softball Coaches Association all-star games next Thursday at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. The East girls will play the Middle Tennessee All-Stars at 5 p.m. EDT and the West Tennessee team at 6:30 EDT. Gathers, a University of Tennessee signee, was a TSCA Class AA all-state selection, as was Sale Creek's Brittany Lanham for Class A.
