University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball coach Will Wade announced Thursday the hiring of Brooks Savage to the coaching staff as the director of basketball operations. Savage was an assistant coach at Presbyterian last season. His responsibilities with the Mocs will include scheduling, travel and administrative aspects of the program. "He has a varied background. He's a jack of all trades, from being an assistant to doing video," Wade said in a text message. "We needed someone who can wear a lot of hats. He fits the bill." Before Presbyterian, Savage coached at Northwest Florida State junior college under Steve Forbes. Savage also worked with the Tulane program in 2010-11 and at Tennessee in 2008-10. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in sports management at Tennessee and was a student manager when UT last played the Mocs in McKenzie Arena. "I'd never met any of the coaches prior to coming here," Savage said, "but Coach Wade and I share a similar philosophy when it comes to style of play, student-athlete success and their welfare. I'm thrilled."

Soccer

• The UTC women's soccer team will play nine home matches at Finley Stadium in 2013, beginning with the Aug. 23 season opener against Austin Peay and an Aug. 30 game against Tennessee Temple. The school announced the schedule Thursday. After a game at Alabama State in Montgomery, coach J.D. Kyzer's Mocs will host UNC-Asheville in another nonconference game on Sept. 8. They then will play South Carolina State and host Gardner-Webb in a tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C., and visit Tennessee Tech before beginning Southern Conference competition. Home admission is free.

Golf

• Knoxville-area and Tennessee Tech golfers Bryce Kendrick and Lee Whitehead shot a 10-under-par 62 Thursday in the first day of stroke-play qualifying in the 43rd annual Tennessee Four-Ball Championship at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, and five duos were one shot behind. One of those included Lee University player Peyton Sliger of Maryville. Matt Crowder and David Watts of Cleveland shot 64. Bob Rice of Riceville and Rick Mays of Athens were tied at 65 with three tandems, one of which included former Baylor School golfer Jay Vandeventer of Bristol, and Signal Mountain's Caleb Roberson and Cleveland's Hunter Vest teamed for a 66. The low 16 teams after today's round will begin match play Saturday.

Rowing

• Notre Dame High School graduate and Chattanooga Junior Rowing alumna Joanna Poinsatte of Hixson completed her college rowing career as a key member of the University of Notre Dame women's team that finished 13th in the nation last weekend. The three-time College Rowing Coaches of America National Scholar-Athlete was in the No. 1 varsity 8 boat for four races at the national championships at Indianapolis.
