Flood danger in North Georgia

ATLANTA - Meteorologists have issued a flash flood warning spanning most of North Georgia over Sunday night and into this morning.

Meteorologists said between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain could fall across the region. Storm drains and low-lying areas quickly could become clogged with debris, which could lead to extensive street and ditch flooding.


Man walking on road killed

LAFAYETTE, Ga. - A man walking on the LaFayette Bypass late Saturday night was struck and killed by a car, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Shawn Michael Bryan, 29, of LaFayette, was walking in the right-hand lane when he was struck by a Buick driven by James F. Brown, 79.

No charges will be filed, the GSP said.


Vann House Days coming in July

CHATSWORTH, Ga. - The annual Chief Vann House Days heritage celebration will be held July 27, according to a news release from Friends of the Vann House.

The home was built in 1803-04 for James Vann, a businessman and Cherokee chief. The celebration will feature demonstrations of arts and crafts of the 1800s, according to the release. Visitors may tour the Vann mansion, the slave exhibit and the Cherokee homestead.

House fire kills 4; more injured

CARTHAGE, Tenn. - A fire in a home in Carthage has killed four people and injured five others.

Fire officials said the blaze started around 11:40 p.m. Saturday, and emergency crews showed up shortly after.

Carthage Fire Chief Joe Hiett told WSMV-TV in Nashville that two adults and two children were killed in the fire. Two people were flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Hiett said the fire likely started in the basement or the back of the house.


Remains of soldier buried

VERBENA, Ala. - A funeral has been scheduled for a soldier who was reported missing in action more than 60 years ago in North Korea.

The body of Army Master Sgt. Olen Berry Williams was returned to his relatives in Alabama last week.

Williams was declared missing in action in December 1960, and his unidentified remains were interred at a national military cemetery in Hawaii. His relatives used forensic identification tools and biographical information to identify him.
