A former nurse at Parkridge Hospital East has been charged with stealing drugs after an investigation revealed she would take painkillers and then bill them to patients who were not under her care.

Shannon Rene Williams has been charged with ten counts of Obtaining a Controlled Substance by Fraud and one count of Felony Theft, according to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Hospital officials became suspicious and reported to authorities in April that they suspected an employee was stealing drugs from the drug dispensing machine, according to the release.

Morphine, Demerol and Dilaudid, which are highly addictive and used to treat moderate to severe pain, were all reported as stolen.
