NASHVILLE - Gov. Bill Haslam today announced he has created a chief operating officer position in Tennessee government and has tapped a former IBM executive to fill it.

Greg Adams' role is working with state departments to "ensure they're operating in the most efficient and effective way possible," the governor's office said in a news release.

Haslam said Adams will "bring a fresh perspective to the work we're doing every day to serve Tennessee taxpayers in the most efficient and effective way."

Adams, 58, previously worked as a member of IBM's senior leadership team, most recently as a managing director in the financial services sector.

Claude Ramsey, who has been the top deputy to Haslam, has announced he will be retiring. Ramsey is a former Hamilton County mayor.
