The chief of criminal investigations for the Bradley County Sheriff's Office is himself under investigation on allegations of official misconduct and tampering with evidence.

Multiple sources told the Times Free Press the allegations involved Capt. Jimmy Woody helping make some evidence disappear in return for sexual favors from a woman suspect.

Woody could not be reached for comment Wednesday. His attorney, Scott Kanavos, said Wednesday that he cannot comment because of the ongoing investigation.

Bradley Chief Deputy Wayne Bird said Wednesday that Woody has been placed on administrative leave.

"We're not making any statement. It would be improper to do so at this time," Bird said by telephone.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed the probe Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the investigation is open and ongoing and that the results would be turned over to the 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office for review.

Woody started with the sheriff's office as a reserve deputy in 1987, according to the department's website. He was a Cleveland Police Department reserve officer and a dispatcher and emergency medical technician for Bradley EMS as well as a dispatcher and supervisor for the Bradley 911 center.

He rejoined the sheriff's office in 1997 as a patrol deputy and served as patrol division captain before being moved to criminal investigations.
