Evelyn Mo wins Lee piano competition

Evelyn Mo took first place in Lee University's annual piano competition held during its International Piano Festival on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus June 17-22. Second place went to Allison To, and Phoebe Pan received third.

Mo, 14, is a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Oak Hill, Va. She has been studying piano with Thomas Mastroianni since 2009.

Her other first-place awards include the 2013 Leschetizky Foundation Gifted Young Pianist Concerto Competition, 2013 Friday Morning Music Club High School Piano Competition, 2013 WMTA Lichtenberg Competition and 2011 Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, Conn.

To, 12, received silver medals at the 2011 Virginia Warning International Piano Competition and the International Russian Music Piano Competition. She was the youngest prize winner at the 2012 Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition. She studies with Yi Dong and Ariel Yang at Opus119 Conservatory in Irvine, Calif.

Pan, 15, also studies at Opus 119 Conservatory in California.

The teen has appeared as soloist with the South Coast Symphony, Los Angeles Bach Festival Orchestra, Seraphim Symphony and the Mount Orchestra.

Pan placed first at the Dubois Piano Competition, won grand prize at the Tureck International Bach Competition for Young Pianists, and the silver medal at the Bösendorfer & Schimmel International Piano Competition.

Six to be added to CHS Hall of Fame

The Chattanooga High School Alumni Association announces six new members of the CHS Hall of Fame, who will be inducted during a ceremony at the school on Dallas Road on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. The school is now home of Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts, a performing arts magnet school.

During the Hall of Fame ceremony, Dr. Wayne Clough will be honored as CHS Alumnus of the Year and the Eiselstein family will be recognized as Dynamo Family of the Year.

New Hall of Fame members are:

• Lynn Trent: Awarded nine varsity letters at CHS over three years, taught at CHS after graduating from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he has served numerous seasons as official timekeeper at UTC athletic events.

• Robin Hood: Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer.

• Emily Watts Card: Financial writer and the first female to host a financial show on cable television.

• Charles Flowers: Writer and composer, Rhodes Scholar finalist.

• Dr. A.R. Casavant: School band director known as the "Father of Marching Band Precision Drill."

• Dorsey Sims: CHS basketball coach who won four state championships, member of the TSSAA Hall of Fame.

Music clubs install officers

New officers of the Chattanooga Music Club were recently installed.

They are Linda Thompson, president; Lounelle Draper, corresponding secretary; Gerald Payne, treasurer; Lynn Swingle, recording secretary; and Frances Parris, historian.

Also, Eve Drucker, first vice president; Buddy Shirk, second vice president; Gary Helton and Pam Helton, third vice presidents; Dolores Harvey, fourth vice president; and Marvin Turner, parliamentarian

• New officers of the Chattanooga Music Teachers Association are Dr. Sigrid Luther, president; Alayne Griffin, treasurer; Katheron Latham, corresponding secretary; Angie Smith, recording secretary; and Beverly Nunley, vice president.

CMTA also honored Sally Powell as its Chattanooga Music Teacher of the Year.

Powell is an adjunct music professor at Bryan College, is vice president of the Chattanooga Music Teachers Association, director of the Bryan College Community Youth Choir and a faculty member of the Bryan College Community Music School. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing.
