KNOXVILLE - Authorities say a man who was swimming with relatives drowned at a Morristown marina.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the body of 23-year-old Carlos Diaz, of Morristown, was recovered around 6 p.m. Saturday by a Hamblen County Volunteer Rescue Squad diver.

Hamblen County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Vaulton said E-911 dispatchers received a call at 4:45 p.m. that a man had possibly drowned at the Evergreen Cove Boat Dock.

Vaulton said Diaz was swimming with a large group of relatives when he went under. He said Diaz did not know how to swim and neither did several of his relatives.

The deputy said they were swimming in deceptively shallow water above a concrete slab underneath the boat dock.

"It gives people a false impression that it is relative shallow," Vaulton said. "Once you get off the concrete slab, it drops off."
