Former Baylor School golfer and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga All-American Stephan Jaeger qualified Friday to play in his first PGA Tour event next week. Jaeger shot a 66 and earned one of two spots to play in the Puerto Rico Open beginning Thursday at Trump International Golf Club -- Puerto Rico in Rio Grande. Jaeger and Jeff Curl topped a field of about 80 who attempted to qualify. "It's just another tournament, but the nerves will be a little different," said Jaeger, a native of Germany. "It's a good time. I'm playing very well and I'm feeling good about my game. Plus, I'm on the beach in Puerto Rico having dinner. It's all pretty good." George McNeill is the defending champion after beating Ryo Ishikawa by two strokes and Boo Weekley and Henrik Stenson by three.
Basketball
• The Lee University women's basketball team won 67-62 over Coastal Georgia in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament semifinals Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., but the nationally second-ranked Lee men fell 67-65 to Faulkner. The Flames (29-3) still will go to the NAIA Division I tournament, but that was their second loss in three games this week. Both were to ranked teams. Cyrille Sandjon led No. 19 Faulkner (27-5) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jamorris Gaines scored 22 points and Chase Dunn had 15 for Lee. Karley Miller scored 20 points off the bench to lead the seventh-ranked Lady Flames (29-2), while Jenna Adams had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Hollie German had 11 points and seven assists. Mary Jackson contributed eight rebounds.
• The Cleveland State basketball teams each rose to 17-9 overall and 10-7 in the TCCAA by defeating Columbia State on Friday. Hannah Brown scored 16 points and Chelsea Jones had 13 points and eight rebounds while Robyn Anthony had six assists and five steals in the Lady Cougars' 68-35 win, and Travis Jones scored 20 points and Dantario Dansby and Ralph Eason added 15 and 14 as the Cougars won 71-59.
Tennis
• After winning four USTA national championships together in 2012, Chattanooga's Wes Cash and doubles partner Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Fla., are seeded No. 1 and playing today for the Men's 55 championship in the Raymond James Super Senior Grand Prix at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Country Club. They could play each other for the singles title, as fourth-seeded Cash and top-seeded Vines play in separate semifinals at 9:30 this morning before teaming up against second-seeded Richard Barrett of Deatsville, Ala., and Jeff Davis of Treasure Island, Fla., in the doubles final at 1 p.m. Cash won 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 over Gil Koppel of Boca Raton, Fla., in the singles round of 16 and 6-2, 6-4 over Steven Brady of Tampa in the quarterfinals. Cash and Vines beat Floridians Robert Steinmetz and Chip Thomas 6-2, 6-2 in the doubles semis.
Baseball
• Defending NAIA national champion Tennessee Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and edged Georgia Gwinnett 2-1 in a baseball game Thursday at Athens, Tenn. Pat Long was 2-for-3 for half the visitors' hits off four Bulldogs pitchers, while TWC (12-4) had six players with one hit each. Brackton Smith's was an RBI triple.
• Josh Silver and Brady Renner each drove in two runs and Jose Samayoa (4-0), Alex Moore and Andy Hillis combined to pitch a five-hitter as third-ranked Lee won 6-2 at Belhaven in SSAC baseball Friday. Jordan Stewart was 2-for-3 and scored twice for Lee (18-2, 7-0).
• Tennessee Temple beat Oakwood University's first-year baseball program 19-0 and 16-0 Friday at Marion County High School. Trey Hill had a three-run home run and another RBI and fellow Marion graduate Caden Shadrick was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs in the first game, when freshman Patrick Lycans pitched a five-inning one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks and Dustin Crumley was 3-for-3 with two doubles. Chris Altman and Caine Elliott each drove in two runs in game two for the Crusaders (6-7).
• Virginia Intermont edged Bryan 6-4 in Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball Friday at Bristol, Va. The last two games of the series will be played Monday. Tyler Carroll was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Bryan's four-run fifth inning that cut into a 5-0 deficit, and Jess Cartner and Joey Underwood each was 2-for-3.
Brescia University beat the Covenant College baseball team 12-5 Friday on the latter's chilly Lookout Mountain Field, as Christian McHatton went 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs, Nate Crocker homered and scored three runs and Jordan Rhodes went 3-for-4 with two runs. The Kentucky school (3-8) led 7-0 before the Scots scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and it was 12-1 before the hosts scored four in the ninth. Scott Gillespie was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Covenant (7-2), which got two hits apiece also from Will Cleland, Paul Phillips and Chris Rollins.
