BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Police have charged a 25-year-old Birmingham man with murder in a fatal shooting just a few months after the suspect was released from prison on a prior manslaughter conviction.

Birmingham police said Saturday that Stanley Brent Chatman is being charged with killing 31-year-old Derrick King, who was found shot outside a home Friday. Police say the two men had a verbal confrontation before the shooting.

Al.com reports Chatman was released from prison in November after serving seven years of a 15-year sentence for manslaughter. Chatman was 19 when he was tried for murder for killing another teenager in a shootout in which both teens had guns and Chatman was also wounded. A jury downgraded the charge.

It was not immediately known Saturday if Chatman had an attorney.
