UTC Mocs logoEven after going 1-2 in round robin play in the Mercer University Bears Classic, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team is playing for the tournament title at 2 p.m. today.
The Lady Mocs (9-9) lost 3-2 to host Mercer in their final round-robin game Saturday afternoon but then played the Bears again as the third seeds against the No. 2 from the round-robin standings and won 8-2 with 16 hits.
Anyssa Robles and Stephanie Rieck each batted in two runs and Sara Poteat, Kasey Tydingco and Kaiti Dutton had the other RBIs in the win for UTC, which plays Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. today. Robles and Tydingco each was 3-for-4 with a double while Rieck, Poteat, Alyssa Taylor and Sara Beth Roberts added two hits apiece. Taylor, Roberts and Dutton scored twice each.
Taylor Deason pitched a complete game with seven hits and one earned run allowed.
Dutton was 2-for-3 and Jenny Garcia and Poteat had RBIs in the loss to Mercer.
• Lee 5-9, Coastal Georgia 2-1: At Brunswick, Ga., the NAIA's 11th-ranked Lady Flames improved to 12-0, 4-0 in the Southernn States Athletic Conference, with the doubleheader sweep. Dominique Hannah had three hits and four RBIs in the opener, when Ana Coscorrosa had two hits and Angie Hughes pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
Katie Deems pitched a five-inning one-hitter in game two, when Hannah was 2-for-3 with a homer and again four RBIs, plus three runs scored, and Laurel Allen homered and scored twice. Amanda Lynn also scored twice; she had a double.
• Chattanooga State 8-14, Cleveland State 2-2: Friday in Cleveland, the Lady Tigers finished a two-day TCCAA sweep with Marina Wilkerson blasting a two-run double and a home run in the first game Friday, when winning pitcher Lacye Walker also homered.
Chattanooga State (9-5, 4-0) took a quick 5-0 lead in game two behind Haley Fagan, who did allow a Paige Mayer home run.
Curtis helps Memphis
Former Chattanooga State player Laura Curtis singled in the first run of the game for Memphis and later doubled and scored as the Tigers won 6-4 over Campbell in their first game of the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational tournament this weekend in Honolulu.
Curtis walked and scored one of the Memphis runs in a later loss to Western Kentucky.
Lewis has RBI, run
GPS graduate Tory Lewis went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run in Tennessee's 5-0 softball win over Valparaiso in this weekend's tournament at North Charleston, S.C. That lifted the Lady Vols to 19-3 for the season.
