A 16-year-old black male was shot and killed at 2620 Carr Street in Chattanooga today.

The teen was killed in a house near Howard High School around 10 a.m., Chattanooga police information officer Nathan Hartwig said.

18-year-old Courtney Birt has been apprehended and charged with criminal homicide.

Howard High School was placed on lockdown as a safety precaution, he said.

A Howard principal on the scene said the student killed "should have been in school," our news partners at WRCB report.
