Chattanooga: Election Commission deciding runoff fate tomorrow

The Hamilton County Election Commission will meet Thursday at 8 a.m. to decide on whether a runoff in the Chattanooga District 9 council race is required.

The race pits current Councilman Peter Murphy against former Councilman Yusuf Hakeem. Hakeem received six more votes than Murphy, but did not receive the 50 percent plus one vote as required by the City Charter.

Hakeem won 1,030 votes to Murphy's 1,024. There were seven write-in votes.

Hamilton County Elections Administrator Charlotte Mullis-Morgan said today that provisional ballots were opened, but there no ballots were cast in District 9.
