The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga blitzed Toledo 9-0 with 18 hits and beat Wagner 9-2 with 12 hits as the USF Under Armour softball tournament got under way Friday in Clearwater, Fla.

Taylor Deason pitched a four-hitter and Rachel Albritton and Kaisey Carson combined on a five-hitter for UTC (12-9),

Alyssa Taylor was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored and Sara Poteat also was 4-for-5 and scored twice against Toledo (5-9) for the Lady Mocs, while Anyssa Robles was 3-for-5, Ninjja Suetsugu was 2-for-3 with two runs and Sarah Beth Roberts and Kasey Tydingco each was 2-for-5. Both Tydingo hits were doubles, as was one of Roberts'.

The Lady Mocs scored two runs in the second inning and five in the third in taking control of that game.

Stephanie Rieck was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs against Wagner (0-6), when Poteat was 2-for-4 with a triple, scored two runs and drove in one and Roberts was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. Sam Taylor was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Taylor also had two runs and an RBI, going 1-for-2 with two sacrifice bunts.

Hammond scores winner

Tennessee senior Whitney Hammond from GPS walked and scored the winning run as the Lady Vols softball team edged No. 1 Alabama 4-3 to open a three-game SEC series Friday.

After Alabama scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game, Hammond walked to lead off the bottom of the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by Raven Chavanne. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Madison Shipman hit a single down the left-field line to score Hammond and give UT the win.

Shipman and Lauren Gibson each had two hits for the Lady Vols, and Cheyanne Tarango hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Ivy Renfroe picked up the win with a scoreless inning in relief of her sister Ellen Renfroe, who struck out six Crimson Tide batters in six innings.

Hughes throws no-hitter

Dominique Hannah went 5-for-8 with a double and two RBIs and Angie Hughes pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in the second game as Lee University beat Bethel (Tenn.) 8-1 and blanked Blue Mountain 6-0 in the Gulf Shores (Ala.) Invitational on Friday.

Hannah, the reigning SSAC player of the week, had both RBIs plus two runs scored against Blue Mountain, when Lexie Dean had three hits with two RBIs and Dezirae Parson had two hits for the Lady Flames (14-0), who are ranked 11th in the NAIA. Jennifer Ringle joined Hannah with three hits against Bethel, and Anna Coscorrosa had two hits and matched Ringle's two RBIs.

Jessa Watts, Katie Deems and Caroline MacAusland combined on a three-hitter.

VI sweeps Bryan

Virginia Intermont beat visiting Bryan 2-0 and 6-2 in Bristol, Va., as Krystle Brenneman went 3-for-3 and scored a run in the first game and Hannah McCloud his a two-run homer in game two.

Chelsea Forney also homered and scored twice in the second win for Intermont (13-5), when Rachel Kirby accounted for two of Bryan's runs with a homer and Christine Marino and Kirstie Jennings each had two hits, an RBI and a run. The Lady Lions (6-8) had only two hits in the opener.
