Deputies make weekend arrests

DeKALB COUNTY, Ala. - DeKalb County Sheriff's Office personnel made several arrests over the weekend.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said deputies arrested Dale Cason, 58, of Albertville, at a home on County Road 4, after they went there to do a welfare check. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, second degree.

Jonathan Lee Allen, 22, of Gadsden, was arrested after a traffic stop near Peeks Corner. He was charged with DUI and unlawful possession of marijuana, second degree.

Germichael Thompson, 36, of Piedmont, was arrested after a traffic stop near Dogtown. He was charged with DUI controlled substance, unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia x 2 and promoting prison contraband.

Ethan Edward Phillips, 20, of Henagar, was arrested on charges of having an illegal open house party Saturday night. Several juveniles were detained there and turned over to their parents.

Also, two Fort Payne men were arrested Thursday after a patrol officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood hit by recent burglaries. A release said agents found a meth lab and chemicals the suspects had hidden. Thomas Michael Guest, 25, and James Wendol Guest, 31, both of Fort Payne, were charged with burglary third, unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful manufacturing of controlled substance and felony drug paraphernalia.

Arrests made in campus rape

FLORENCE, Ala. - Hospital officials called University of North Alabama police while treating a female student who reported that she was raped in a dormitory over the weekend.

Campus police Chief Bob Pastula said the woman was assaulted by multiple men after one of them "coaxed her into his dorm room."

She was taken to the hospital by friends.

Authorities say two men have been arrested and an arrest warrant was expected later Monday for a third suspect. The men have not yet been identified.

'Best barbecue' voting begins

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - People can go to Facebook and start voting on Alabama's best barbecue restaurant.

The Alabama Tourism Department is sponsoring the competition as part of its Year of Alabama Food.

The competition is in brackets like the NCAA basketball tournament and 32 restaurants are starting. Voting starts Monday, and voting in each bracket lasts for three days. Voting for restaurants in the Final Four will be April 1-5.

Officials said the winning restaurant will be announced April 8.
