UTC Mocs Club to host selection event Monday and other sports news

The UTC Mocs Club will host an NCAA women's basketball selection show gathering Monday evening at the Big River Grille in downtown Chattanooga as the Lady Mocs find out their placement in next week's Division tournament. The public is invited. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the team will arrive about 6:30, with the program set to begin at 6:45. The televised announcements will begin on ESPN at 7.

• Seventh-seeded Tennessee Temple will be playing for seventh place against eighth seed Roberts Wesleyan in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I men's basketball tournament today at 3 p.m. at Winona Lake, Ind. Temple (22-13) lost 87-58 in Wednesday's late game to No. 2 seed and defending champion Cedarville and then fell 85-60 to sixth seed Spring Arbor in a Thursday morning game. Weedlens Beauvil and Corey Sanders each scored 11 points and Rashaud Bell added 10 against Spring Arbor, which got 29 points and nine rebounds from Matt Howe and 17 points and eight rebounds from Chris Bellamy. Howe made 10 of 14 shots from the field and nine of 10 free throws. Hampton Mack, who led Temple in rebounds Thursday with seven, had 11 points with Elliot Johnson's 13 against Cedarville, whose Austin Foote scored 24 on 10-of-13 shooting. Temple shot 38.5 percent Wednesday night and 30.3 percent in its quick return to the court.

Baseball

• The Tennessee Temple baseball team improved to 10-9 for the season by beating Ohio Christian 4-0 and 3-2 in eight innings Thursday at Signal Mountain High School. Hunter Giles pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts in the first game, when Caden Shadrick had an RBI double, Brandon Blome hit a two-run single and Brett Bartley had two hits and the other RBI. Dylan Massengill pitched all of game two, striking out 10 and allowing one earned run. Shadrick was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Sean Leitstein had an RBI single and Dustin Crumley singled in Trey Hill with the winning run.

• Branden Walker was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jake Stone and Michael Carballo also drove in two runs each when Tennessee Wesleyan beat Ohio Christian 10-0 on Brent Adheen's four-hitter Wednesday. Then Brackton Smith was 3-for-3 with a homer and Logan Dalton had a sacrifice fly as the Bulldogs (20-6) edged UVA-Wise 2-1. Zach Fleshman allowed four hits in six innings and Noah Piard had a one-hit seventh for the save.

Softball

• In Shorter's 7-3 victory in the softball doubleheader split with Lee on Wednesday, former Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe player Maddie Bray got the pitching win, Calhoun graduate Bre Johnson was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Gordon Lee grad Kendall Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Lady Hawks (19-3). Bre Johnson also was 2-for-4 with a homer in the loss to the Lady Flames (18-1), whose highlights were reported Thursday.

• Shanna Chappell pitched a six-hitter as Bryan College responded from a 4-0 loss in the opening game of its Appalachian Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday with a 6-0 win at Columbia (S.C.) College. Rachel Kirby and Taylor Yates each was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in the win for Bryan (8-10, 3-5), when Beka James and Katelyn Bowen each was 2-for-3 and Kirstie Jennings was 2-for-4. Jennings and James had the only hits off Erin Walker of Columbia (11-7, 2-2) in game one.

Lacrosse

• Sammy Strasburger recorded 13 saves and Molly Arnold and Sally Anne Greenwood each netted three goals as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team won 7-4 over FDU-Florham in a Wednesday morning match at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Olivia Vietor added two goals for the Tigers (5-4).

• Davis Brown had three goals and an assist and Tommy Healy made eight saves in the Sewanee men's 11-7 lacrosse loss Wednesday against Kean. That left the Tigers 4-2. Kean (4-1) got three goals from Richard Cheifitz and 15 saves from Lane Zierten.
