MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis police say an officer has critically wounded a man suspected of shoplifting at a Walmart.

Police said an off-duty Memphis officer who was working at the Walmart on Wednesday night saw a man allegedly shoplifting. The officer then followed the man out of the store and notified two on-duty officers.

A preliminary investigation shows that the man became angry when the officers tried to speak with him and he refused their commands. Police said the man assaulted one of the officers, and a fight began.

Police said the man reached inside of his waistband as if he was hiding a weapon. The man allegedly refused to show his hands and made a sudden, spinning move toward officers.

An officer shot the unidentified man, who was taken to a hospital.
