Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and NFL offensive lineman Curtis Rouse died Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. The Clarksville resident was 52. A celebration of life for him will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. EDT at the First Baptist Church of Clarksville, and the family will receive friends beginning at 2 that day at the church and from 4 to 8 p.m. CDT Wednesday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home. Rouse helped the Mocs win the Southern Conference championship and was all-conference before playing from 1982 to '86 for the Minnesota Vikings and in 1987 for the San Diego Chargers. He was part of the UTC all-century team and in 2005 was inducted into the school's sports hall of fame. • Tennessee Titans linebacker Colin McCarthy and wide receiver Kendall Wright are lined up for the Academy Sports & Outdoors Titans Caravan stop Wednesday in Hixson. That's scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Academy store on Highway 153, after a morning visit to Stone Elementary School in Crossville. The caravan has another public stop Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Knoxville with wideout Marc Mariani and linebacker Zach Brown joining Wright and McCarthy.
Baseball
• Lee University and Faulkner were declared co-champions of the Southern States Athletic Conference baseball tournament when league officials decided Saturday to cancel the championship game because of heavy rain in Columbus, Ga. Both teams, ranked No. 2 (Faulkner) and No. 3 in the NAIA -- as well as William Carey, which finished second to Lee in one of the SSAC pools -- already were selected to host NAIA opening series starting Thursday. No. 8 and defending NAIA champion Tennessee Wesleyan will be hosting one in Kingsport, Tenn., as the Appalachian Athletic Conference champion. Corey Davis was 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in as Lee (46-10) won 11-5 Friday against William Carey (35-21). Brandon Rader was 3-for-4 and scored twice while Karsten Strieby was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, Brady Renner was 2-for-3 with two runs and Derrick Pitts homered and drove in two runs.
• The TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII baseball tournament at Gallatin, Tenn., was rained out Saturday and now will extend to Monday with Saturday's schedule moved to today. Chattanooga State plays Dyersburg State, a 19-10 loser to Columbia State on Friday, at 4 p.m. EDT after falling 7-6 to host Volunteer State. The Pioneers led 6-0 through three innings, but Chattanooga State got even with a four-run fourth and two runs in the fifth. Jonathan Allison scored the winning run in the seventh, leading off with a double, taking third on a groundout and stealing home. He and Chaz Vesser each was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Wes Warren was 2-for-4 with a two-run triple for Vol State. Ryan Whitt and Austin Swayze each had two hits and matched Marquis Webb with two RBIs for Chatt State. Whitt doubled twice.
• Junior first baseman Heath Comerford from McMinn County High School was the Tusculum College male student-athlete of the month for April. He started all 17 of the Pioneers' games in April and batted .403 with two homers, two triples, seven doubles, 15 walks and 19 RBIs as they went 12-5. Comerford ended the season with a .337 average, seven homers, four triples, 49 RBIs and a league-high 20 doubles.
• Sewanee senior Blake Williams and sophomore Michael Walker were All-Southern Athletic Association baseball second-team choices for 2013, and Tigers junior Jack Rogers received honorable mention. Williams had a team-high .354 batting average with 24 runs batted in and 26 scored, and Walker hit .288 with 27 RBIs and a team-high 13 doubles.
• Covenant College is the fifth seed and Tennessee Temple and Hiwassee are seeded sixth and seventh for the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Region baseball tournament this week in Nashville. Covenant's Scots (25-13) from NCAA Division III will play fourth seed Victory University at 5 p.m. EDT Wednesday, followed at 8 by Temple (16-20) against third seed Union University. Host and No. 2 seed Trevecca Nazarene will play Hiwassee at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday. Campbellsville is seeded No. 1 and has a first-round bye in the double-elimination event that ends Saturday. The winner gets an automatic berth in the NCCAA World Series set for May 15-18 in Mason, Ohio.
Softball
• Lee University's chance to win the SSAC softball tournament had to wait a day because of rain in Columbus, Ga. The nationally third-ranked Lady Flames (43-9) await the winner of the 1 p.m. losers-bracket final between Spring Hill and the survivor of Belhaven's matchup with Auburn-Montgomery at 11 a.m. in the championship game, with Lee having to lose twice. The Saturday schedule was moved back 25 hours.
• Chattanooga State and the other three teams at the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII softball tournament at Gallatin, Tenn., got pushed back a day after Friday's first two games. Usual winner Chatt State, the reigning national champion, is in the losers bracket playing host Volunteer State at 4 p.m. EDT.
• Sewanee sophomores Sarah Anne Hamilton and Sarah Fleming were voted to the SAA all-tournament team after last week's postseason losses to Rhodes and Hendrix. Hamilton was 2-for-5 in the two games; Fleming was 2-for-6.
Track & Field
• Sewanee sophomore Sally Warm from Baylor School was a first-team 2013 All-SAA women's track and field selection, and junior Willow Smith was a second-team choice. Sewanee freshman Amiel Emerson was an All-SAA men's first-teamer with sophomore Hudson Robb receiving honorable mention. The awards were based on performances at the SAA outdoor meet last weekend, and Emerson was second in the 800-meter run in 1:58.16. Warm won league titles in the long jump and triple jump, and Smith was second in the women's 10k. Hudson was third in the men's 10000 and fifth in the 5000.
General
• The final Chattanooga Quarterback Club meeting of the 2012-13 school year is set for noon Monday at Finley Stadium with new UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn as the guest speaker. As always, the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
• Outdoor Chattanooga's "Splash Into Spring" paddlesports festival and demo day scheduled for today at the Chickamauga Dam recreation area has been canceled, but L2 Boards' Cinco de Mayo SUP Challenge race is still on.
