KNOXVILLE - Guard Travon Landry from Madison, Ala., has been released from his national letter of intent with the Tennessee basketball program.

Coach Cuonzo Martin confirmed the move to the Times Free Press on Saturday afternoon via text message. The Volunteers now are back under the NCAA's 13-player scholarship limit for next season after they were two over at one point earlier this spring.

The 6-foot Landry committed to Tennessee in December 2011 as a junior at the Huntsville, Ala., area's Bob Jones High School and signed with the Vols in November after transferring to St. Joseph Prep School in Huntington, W.Va., for his senior year.

At Huntington, the three-star prospect and Texas native played alongside three players -- center Moses Kingsley (Arkansas), guard Xaiver Rathan-Mayes (Florida State) and center Dominic Woodson (Baylor) -- headed to major conference programs in addition to forward Andrew Wiggins, Rivals.com's top-rated player in the 2013 class who's yet to decide on his college destination.

On that loaded team, the defensive-minded Landry averaged 2.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, according to Maxpreps.com.

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, Landry took an official visit to New Mexico State this past week.

With forward Jeronne Maymon returning next year after missing this past season due to a lingering knee problem and juniors Jordan McRae and sophomore Jarnell Stokes electing to return instead of jumping into the NBA draft, the Vols were at 15 players for next year after signing Murfreesboro point guard Darius Thompson and junior college center Rawane Ndiaye in the late signing period.

Sophomore center Yemi Makanjuola was granted his release to transfer last month, and now Landry will play his college career elsewhere after signing in the fall along with five-star in-state shooting guard Robert Hubbs and forward A.J. Davis from Georgia.
