Lady Bucs win region title again

It has been a busy yet very successful week for Katie Delay.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Boyd-Buchanan tennis standout battled her way to the District 5-A/AA individual singles championship. Thursday she earned the clinching victory for the Lady Bucs in their 4-0 victory over Hixson in the Region 3-A/AA team tournament at the Brainerd courts.

Delay would love to sleep today, but practices in preparation for tournaments next week won't allow that.

Delay outlasted Hixson's Whitney Clack, with the 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles giving the Lady Bucs their third consecutive region championship. Boyd-Buchanan (16-1) will face Chattanooga Christian in a sectional match next week.

"I really don't enjoy long matches," Delay said afterward, "but I had to push through."

Makenna Thomas, Paige Zumbrun and Peyton Miller also won.

"I've believed in these girls since day one," first-year coach Mikki Brown said. "I saw the potential and knew they could do it. They worked hard to get ready for this."

Hixson (10-7) was coming off its first district championship since 2001. Clack -- one-half of the two-time defending district doubles champions, with Michelle Phillips -- and Haylee Gossett each pushed a match into three sets, with the latter's match against Shelby Brown stopped when Delay finished her win.

"I never thought the girls gave up," Hixson coach Raul Fernandez said. "They gave everything they had out there today."
