Woman: Husband has three wives
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - A Sevierville man faces bigamy charges after his wife told police he has two other wives.
Terrie Marion reported 42-year-old Phillip Marion to police Wednesday. He turned himself in and was released on $1,000 bond.
Terrie Marion told The Mountain Press she has been married since 2002. She said she knew her husband had a son in South Carolina from another marriage, but she did not realize until recently he was still married to the mother. She said she learned this week that he has a third wife in Ohio.
She is hoping to have her marriage annulled.
In Tennessee, bigamy is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
'No confidence' in college leader
GADSDEN, Ala. - Employees at Gadsden State Community College have entered a vote of "no confidence" in school President Ray Staats.
About 350 employees participated in a vote done by the Alabama Education Association on Wednesday. George Terrell, a history and geography teacher who is president of the Gadsden State Education Association, told the Gadsden Times 312 employees entered no-confidence votes.
Gadsden State employees say the votes stemmed from frustration over Staats' leadership style, decisions involving budget cuts and the amount of money spent on campus renovations.
School spokeswoman Kay Smith-Foster said Staats has not had time to analyze the results fully.
Terrell said the results will be taken to Alabama Community College System Chancellor Mark Heinrich, who has authority to hire and fire community college presidents.
Slain man hauled around in truck
MARIETTA, Ga. - Authorities say the grandson of a 78-year-old man stole his wallet and then used his truck -- with the body still inside -- to drive around metro Atlanta on a shopping spree with his girlfriend.
Edward Smith of Lilburn was reported missing Sunday. His body was found Tuesday night on a road in Mableton.
Police say Smith's grandson, Casey Ryan Collins, 30, and Sarah Elizabeth Cook, 23, face charges of felony murder. Arrest warrants obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution allege that Cook stabbed Smith in the chest with a knife as Collins used a belt to choke him.
Alabama names teacher of year
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A Birmingham high school teacher has been named the 2013-14 Alabama Teacher of the Year.
Alison Grizzle, a math teacher at P.D. Jackson Olin High School, will serve as spokeswoman and representative for teachers in Alabama for the next year.
