During Wesleyan College's Alumnae Weekend, Jody Bethea Riggs of Chattanooga received the Alumnae Association's Distinguished Service to Wesleyan Award.
Riggs, class of 1988, has volunteered for the Macon, Ga., college for 25 years since her graduation. She has been a student recruiter, hosted alumnae events in her home for prospective students, served as an alumnae admission representative, attended college fairs and presented Wesleyan First Awards in high schools in this area.
She was treasurer of Wesleyan's Board of Managers for six years and president of the Alumnae Association for three years.
Barker receives Trail of Tears Award
William "Bill" Barker received the William "Tommy" Cox Memorial Award at a recent meeting of the Georgia chapter of the Trail of Tears Association.
Barker moved to North Georgia after 50 years of employment in the textile industry at the John P. King plant in Augusta, Ga.
He was honored for his assistance with finding funds for signage to mark the Trail of Tears in Georgia, working with the Georgia Department of Transportation and National Park Service to get the signs developed. The signs will soon be placed in Chattooga County.
Wilson named to Top 30 Under 30
Lacey Wilson of Chickamauga, Ga., is one of 30 alumni named by the University of West Georgia Alumni Association to its first Top 30 Under 30 list.
She is public relations coordinator for Blood Assurance in Chattanooga.
CSAS students win math awards
Several middle-school students from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences participated in the first Southeast Mathematics Competition at Lee University.
The event registered more than 150 students from 11 middle schools in Hamilton, Knox, Meigs, Polk, Bradley, Marion, Rhea and Catoosa counties.
The competition consisted of individual and team events in which students completed two 10-question tests of various levels of mathematics. Students also competed in a Buzzer Bracket Round against another school to have the first correct answer to 10 questions. Questions were selected from TCAP and Common Core Math resources.
Winners for highest scores on individual tests were Rohit Krishnamoorthy, sixth grade; Jamie Pouncey, seventh grade; and Allycia Lee, eighth grade.
The seventh-grade Buzzer Bracket winning team included Dana Walden, Wyatt Williamson, Ezra Nichols, Aidan Parks and Rohit Krishnamoorthy. The winning eighth-grade Buzzer Bracket team was Allycia Lee, Mackenzie Wall, Emily Thomas, Jonathan Shelton and Jamie Pouncey.
Students with the overall highest team score for the full competition were Allycia Lee, Mackenzie Wall and Emily Thomas, eighth-graders; Jonathan Shelton and Jamie Pouncey, seventh-graders.
Deaton's music guide published
Tony Deaton, associate professor of music at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., has published his book, "Stop! Look! Listen! A Practical Guide to Vocal Technique and Performance." The guidebook gives instructions on handling challenges of vocal technique and performance.
Deaton joined the faculty of Lee's School of Music in 1996.
