ATLANTA - A man who lost his leg to a disease is embarking on a walk from Atlanta to Birmingham, Ala., to benefit Limbs for Life.
The organization is a global nonprofit organization which provides prostheses for those who can't afford them.
CBS Atlanta reports that starting today, Mark Sweatman will lead the 120-mile walk. It is expected to continue through Nov. 17. Sweatman is accepting donations in support of his walk on his website, AmputatedYetWhole.com.
Sweatman says he lost his left leg to Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy at age 38. While walking in Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Sweatman suffered a simple broken foot. That break led to RSD, a painful and debilitating neurological condition that could have spread to his whole leg. Amputation below the knee was the result.
