Job fair set for Alabama mill workers hit by layoffs

COURTLAND, Ala. - More than 1,000 people who are being laid off at a north Alabama paper mill will have a chance to find new jobs.

A two-day job fair begins today for about 1,100 workers who are losing their jobs as International Paper shuts down its plant at Courtland.

WAAY-TV reports that companies including Alabama Power, BP, 3M and ThyssenKrupp Steel will have representatives on hand. So will the Alabama Department of Corrections, which is looking for new officers.

The job fair will be held at Courtland Baptist Church near the mill.

International Paper plans to shut down the plant by March. It's the largest employer in Lawrence County with a payroll of about $86 million.
