The top-seeded pair of Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Va., won 6-3, 6-1 over Matthew Barker and Jeff Tonjes of Albuquerque, N.M., in the USTA National Men's 55 Hard Court Championships doubles semifinals Friday at Indian Wells, Calif. Standing in the way of their sixth 55s national title together in the last two years -- and a second consecutive four-tournament "golden slam" for Cash -- are Myron Pushyk of Wichita, Kan., and John Virgin of Palm Desert, Calif., who won 7-5, 6-1 over Ross Persons of Houston and Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore. Tammen was Cash's partner for the first two USTA national titles this year.

Volleyball

• Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers each was credited with 15 kills and Chelsea VanDyk had 13 as Covenant College defeated Meredith 3-1 in the USA South volleyball tournament quarterfinals Friday at Martinsville, Va. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 46 assists and 10 digs, Anna Swain had 10 kills and 11 digs and Estes Carlson had 22 digs in the 24-26, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 victory for the Lady Scots (21-10), seeded third from the South division. They face North top seed Maryville at noon today.

• Chelsea Breaden scored 14 points and Kara Stamper added 11 as Bryan College finished its volleyball regular season 30-3 overall and 19-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-11, 25-16) Friday at Point University. Taylor Fink had 34 assists and Corrie Walker had 13 digs. Shelby Enoch added 14 assists.

• Jamie Sue Wilson had 17 kills and 17 digs and Diamond Stewart had 14 kills and 10 digs as Sewanee defeated Centre 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 32-30) in the Southern Athletic Association volleyball tournament Friday at Rome, Ga. Kayla Sewell added eight kills with 12 digs, Rachel Schumann and Walker Buxton had 22 and 14 assists and Jamie Kosman made 25 digs for the Tigers (15-12). Wilson made the All-SAA second team for the season, and Sewell and Stewart received honorable mention.

• Lee University beat visiting Union University 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15) in Gulf South Conference volleyball Friday. Lee is 14-6 overall, 10-4 in the GSC.

Fishing

• Silverdale Baptist Academy senior Cody Thomas signed scholarship papers Friday to join Bryan College's inaugural bass fishing team. Collegiate fishing is becoming increasingly popular, but most schools treat it as a club sport and do not give scholarships. Thomas plays football and baseball for SBA in addition to being on the second-year angling team, and he said he had "no idea" until recently that fishing would be his avenue to college. "It's really neat how everything worked out," he said. "God let everything come together." Bryan coach Mike Keen said a fishing team was a "natural" addition for the private college in Dayton. "We're right across the road from the Dayton Boat Dock," he said. "This year we're putting a team together. Hopefully next year we'll be fishing. We feel we hit a home run with Cody. I'd like to have 10 or 12 more like him. It's easy to find kids who want to come and fish, but finding kids like this is a little more difficult -- who are serious about an education and who love the Lord and want to grow spiritually." Silverdale coach Brent Brady praised Thomas's leadership and his development in knowledge and adaptability on the water in the last year and said, "I feel he'll grow in each aspect in college as well." Added the 30-pro angler: "This is exciting to me. These kids can't play football or baseball all their lives, but they can fish the rest of their lives."

Soccer

• No. 2 seed Piedmont College beat sixth-seeded Covenant 3-1 in the USA South women's soccer tournament semifinals Friday at Martinsville, Va., and fifth seed Meredith got past top seed Maryville on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through overtime. For Piedmont (15-2-3), Shayna Rogers assisted on the first goal at 25:01 and scored the last one at 74:25. Andrea Hunt scored unassisted for Covenant (10-9-2) two minutes into the second half, and Hannah Bales made 10 saves as the Lady Scots were outshot 14-4.

• Emily Driver and Nikki Johnston scored from assists by Shelby Meckstroth and Jamie Samociuk and Sewanee withstood a late Birmingham-Southern goal to win 2-1 in the SAA women's soccer tournament Friday at Birmingham. BSC outshot Sewanee (11-5-1) 20-9. The Sewanee men lost 2-0 to Oglethorpe at Conway, Ark.
