Cash completes repeat golden slam and other sports news

Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Va., made their USTA National Men's 55 Hard Court doubles championship an overpowering one Saturday at Indian Wells, Calif. They beat Myron Pushyk of Wichita, Kan., and John Virgin of Palm Desert, Calif., 6-0, 6-0 in the final that capped the second age-group "golden slam" in a row for Cash. The Manker Patten teaching pro and Vines won all four USTA Men's 55s national titles together in 2012 and the last two of 2013, after Cash won the first two this year with Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore. Cash also won the clay court singles national championship but didn't play singles in hard courts.

Running

• Host Bryan College won its fifth consecutive Appalachian Athletic Conference men's cross country championship ans sixth in seven years Saturday with the Lions' Anthony Simpson, Connor Hatfield and Alex Stephens finished first through third and Jason McLeod and Tyler Boone were seventh and 12th. Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Roderick Bowman was fourth in 24 minutes, 27.83 seconds in the 8-kilometer race, behind Simpson's 24:12.36, Hatfield's 24:19.99 and Stephens' 24:21.68. TWC's Joseph Mullen was 11th with fellow Bulldogs Samuel Hawkins, Jacob Simmons, Chad Whitehead and Arnold Mutuse 13th through 16th. The Lions won the eight-team competition with 25 points, and TWC was second with 57. TWC was second in the women's 5k, to Milligan, which had the top three finishers and 21 points to the Lady Bulldogs' 46. Wesleyan's Robbiccaa Williams and Leah Chance were fourth and fifth individually in 19:03.63 and 19:14.04, and teammates Jesse Hodnett and Lauren Barnes were 11th and 14th, sandwiching Bryan's Hannah Schroeder and Michelle McLeod.

Volleyball

• Covenant College got 14 kills from Chelsea VanDyk and 10 from Cora Schroeder but lost 3-1 to Maryville College in the semifinals of the USA South volleyball tournament Saturday in Martinsville, Va. Top-seeded Maryville then beat No. 2 seed Piedmont 3-1 for the title. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 39 assists and 16 digs in the 29-27, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20 loss for Covenant (21-11), and Estes Carlson also had 16 digs.

• Lee University pulled out a close, close 3-2 Gulf South Conference volleyball win over visiting Christian Brothers on Saturday, as Latrice Johnson and Lauren Williams downed 14 kills apiece and Paula Martins added 12 with 20 digs and three block solos. Camil Martinez had 43 assists and 24 digs and Deborah Magalhaes and Sarah Davis had 21 and 11 digs as the Lady Flames prevailed 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-13.

• Appalachian State defeated the visiting University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) in Southern Conference volleyball Saturday in Boone, N.C., dropping the Mocs to 4-24 overall, 3-10 in the league. Briana Reid had 10 kills and 10 digs, Melissa Green had 12 digs and Anne Bachmann had 22 assists for UTC. Lauren Gray made 12 kills and Lindsey Sauls, Kat Ferrell and Emily Corrigan added nine, nine and eight for ASU (17-11, 8-6), while Paige Brown had 43 assists.

• Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School led King University with 17 digs in a 3-1 home volleyball win Saturday against Barton College. The 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 victory lifted the Tornado to 28-4 overall and 16-1 in the Conference Carolinas.

Soccer

• Top-seeded Bryan College squeaked by Union College 1-0 on Daniel Branley's overtime goal from a Stephen Millage assist 16:51 into extra play in the AAC men's soccer tournament quarterfinals Saturday night. Second-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan was one of the day's three upset victims, falling 2-1 to ninth-seeded St. Andrews. Bryan (13-3) outshot Union 20-14 and got four saves from Josh Oldroyd in the shutout.

Football

• UTC receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Will Healy will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Healy is a former Boyd-Buchanan School standout who was on Richmond's 2008 national championship team. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Swimming

• The Sewanee swimming and diving teams beat Bethel and SAA rival Berry in a meet Friday in the winners' pool. Also, Sewanee's Mac McNally and Chloe Stevenson were announced as the SAA swimmers of the week for the previous weekend, and the Tigers' David Evans was the men's diver of the week. McNally won the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle races Friday, and Evan Escobar in the 200 individual medley, Brian Glatt in the 100 free and Frazier Devaney in 1- and 3-meter diving were other Sewanee individual men's event winners; McNally, Will Ralston, Alex Linton and Glatt had a four-second 200 free relay victory. Sewanee's Caty Hueske and Carolyn Rice won two women's events each, and Alaina Mandel, Ana Thorson, Astrid Escobar and diver Margaret Peterson were other victors.
