Money still flows into the Treasury Department and money still flows out, for Social Security or to make interest payments on the debt. Still funded and operating will be the military, border control, food inspections, air traffic, prisons, weather service, and post office, all keep going. And, as long as the Treasury Department has room to continue its “extraordinary measures” or if the debt limit goes up in the meantime, Treasury still pays the debt as it comes due, without missing a beat.

The downside is that if you need a passport or want to get into a national park, you are out of luck. Non-essential services stop and non-essential federal workers get furloughed.

In prior shut downs the economy improved and it will this time if it last long enough.

Think about it. How fast would things improve if the federal government only funded (spent tax money) essential services and concentrated on preventing excesses, waste, fraud, abuse and poor management of those services? National parks once developed should be self sufficient by charging users and visitors sufficiently to pay for manning and maintaining.

What already incurred bills will not be paid? Interest on the debt will continue to be paid plus all essential services will be funded primarily with current revenue. Remember how the economy improved and the budget was balanced after Gingrich and Clinton did something like this?

I don't like either party and support the libertarian policies but with so many today scared of liberty and independence they can't win an election. We may be headed for a one party system with the growing number of greedy non-contributors on the left prevailing over the dwindling number of moralist police on the right.

I don't care if Obamacare remains but it will cause healthcare premiums to increase and the OMB says the number uninsured will remain essentially the same. Who will benefit from that? Why was an exception made for congress, their staff and other government employees? Why were businesses given a one year exemption? Why were some special exemptions granted?

I could do what the government keeps doing. Pay interest only on those at the limit and get a new card. Each time one is at the max get another and pay interest only on those maxed out. That is the way the federal government is doing it and it will work until all the revenue goes to pay interest. Future generations will curse the greedy that are now financing their future so they can live the good life leaving them no life other than drowning in debt.

Let's just sit back and watch the debacle of 17 years ago replay. I assume you are old enough to remember it, but do not worry, history has a way of repeating itself, particularly if you forget the past.

In a democracy/democratic republic you don't throw a temper tantrum blathering miasma and calling everyone who disagrees with you "stupid" every time you don't get your way without being branded a playground crybaby, or worse, when you pretend to be Samson and try to pull the temple down and self-immolate, a terrorist.

We have some odd principle of government called "majority rule." Let us have a clean straight up or down vote on the budget to see where folks stand. ACA is Supreme Court-endorsed law, if you want to try to change it, do it on a stand alone bill like your reds have tried 40 or so times before. (I still chuckle that the GOP self-identifies as "reds." )

Obama did give corporations an exemption but will not give the average American citizen an exemption from obamacare. Obama also gave subsidies to himself and all the members of congress and their staffs as well as unions and other groups who lobbied for exemptions by giving the dummycratic party millions of dollars. What is amazing is liberals think that Republicans should vote for funding of something they were completely left out of and are totally against and had no say so in it's implementation. Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional.

What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected.

To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession.

The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business,and put everyone into a government run system. All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats, and most of them will not be health care professionals. Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled by the government.

However, as scary as all of that is, it just scratches the surface. In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of government that has ever occurred,or even been contemplated. If this law or a similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively have been destroyed.

The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American people, and the businesses they own.

The irony is that the Congress doesn't have any authority to legislate in most of those areas to begin with! I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of Congress to regulate health care.

This legislation also provides for access, by the appointees of the Obama administration, of all of your personal healthcare a direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution, information, your personal financial information, and the information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.

If you decide not to have healthcare insurance, or if you have private insurance that is not deemed acceptable to the Health Choices Administrator appointed by Obama, there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a tax instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment. However , that doesn't work because since there is nothing in the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is definitely depriving someone of property without the due process of law.

So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so much, out the original ten in the Bill of Rights, that are effectively nullified by this law. It doesn't stop there though.

The 9th Amendment that provides: The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;

The 10th Amendment states: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas that once were theirs to control.

I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of both houses of Congress to "be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution." If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or anything like it, without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway, I would hope the American people would hold me accountable.

For those who might doubt the nature of this threat, I suggest they consult the source, the U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights. There you can see exactly what we are about to have taken from us.

joneses and others have been pretty hard today on those they call liberals and the failure that must ensue because of their policies. joneses et al could be correct of course, but let me throw out a comparison that doesn't support their premise.

As many on this site know, I now live in Victoria BC. Greater Victoria is the same size as Chattanooga and also is a family friendly vacation destination. The area sports lots of natural beauty, again like Chattanooga. The weather is mild...similar in many ways to Chattanooga, my former home.

Joneses, however would quickly observe that Victorians are almost all far more dedicated to the common good than he and in ways that he does not like. Victorians pay higher taxes, take amazing care of all people with challenges, enjoy universal health care, don't allow guns, believe in climate change and science, believe that religion is private and individual, live to about 83 on average, are 18% immigrants from all over the world, support adequate spending on effective public education, recycle almost everything, have very low violent crime, are extremely civil in their interactions, and can mostly be described as liberals, progressives, or greens...probably in excess of 80%.

Victoria is possibly the best city in all of North America and it is run and populated by what joneses calls idiots. I have lived with joneses' conservatives and I now live with what joneses calls idiots. I have seen how things work and how people respond with these two very different personality types. The satisfaction and happiness level here is amazing.

It was the Obama Administration that denied them access to the Memorial you can't blame that on the GOP.

The Interior Dept., which manages the NPS is CLOSED because of the ongoing shenanigans in the House. What part of government shutdown don't you understand? Ted Cruz Canadian-logic is flawed. Lets examine that statement a bit. After the GOP led House demanded that the Senate pass a budget, the Senate did exactly that. Over 6 months ago. A conference was required to reconcile the House & Senate budgets. But guess what? The GOP repeatedly objected to a conference until ONE HOUR BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN. That's because a conference would have nullified their strategy of hostage taking & ransom.

So now they want a conference, even though the Senate budget maintains the cuts put into effect by the sequester. Why does the GOP want a conference? S0 they can 'negotiate' policy riders atop a continuing resolution budget bill. Ain't gonna happen.

Senator Reid is correct. The Banana Republicans have lost their minds. The House has ZERO leverage, and Senator Corker tried repeatedly to point that out to The Canadian, to no avail. This shutdown rests solidly on the shoulders of John Boehner and his lunatic fringe Tea Party caucus.

Obama missed half of Obamacare's implementation deadlines.

Obama unilaterally delayed the employer mandate for at least another year.

Obama took it upon himself to override the original writing of the healthcare law to make sure that congressmen and their staffs can collect big subsidies for their coverage.

Yet his administration will not allow veterans to visit the WWII memorial.

After the 96 shutdown the Republicans were absolutely devastated at the polls during the following election. They loss at least 2 seats in the house and only picked up 2 seats in the Senate. It was a complete and absolute rout.

It was a presidential election year with Clinton retaining the office which historically his party should have gain considerably in Congress even without the shutdown. 2014 will be the midterms of Obama's 2nd term and the president's party usually suffers great losses during those elections.

Hopefully the suicidal Fleabaggers will not litter the streets, sidewalks, and parks with their molding bodies.

We already have Government programs for healthcare.Medicade is for the poor to get medical care.We have medicare for the elderly,We have the SCHIP for the kids.Tennessee has Tenncare for the poor Georgia has Peachcare for the poor.What do all these programs have in common? They are all going bankrupt.So what is the answer the dems come up with?A new entitlement program that will surely push us over the financial cliff.90 percent of the American people were o.k with their insurance the way it was.If the majority rules like I hear from the libs on this forum all the time how is this any different.30 million people will still not have insurance so how is this program going to help.This is an attempt by the progressives to run the insurance company's out of business.Then they can have the European single payer system they have wanted for many,many years.The problem is it doesn't work.Look at the U.K.,they have sick people getting care in hallways,waiting rooms,and even in the parking lots.They don't have enough doctors or hospitals to care for their people.Is this what we really want for this country.If socialized medicine is the best system for the care of our people why didn't we wait and prepare for this huge undertaking.Rationed care, death panels,long waiting periods and people losing their doctors,and people losing their insurance is not what the American people signed up for.Remember they passed this bill with no republican support.So everybody remember who to blame when the system of health care crumbles under the huge weight of not being able to pay for it's costs. God help us all.

I also call BS on your comment about the "president" having his credit rating lowered. Anyone who was paying attention understands why that happened. The credit rating agencies and the Fed explained it all too clearly. Brinkmanship related to the budget & debt ceiling by the CONGRESS caused that. And more specifically, the GOP Congress. The Teabaggers wanted the shutdown, and many want a default. Guess what? They own it now!!

Update: A commenter wisely points out that, at the time that Beck made this comment, there was a bill that had language in it that was punishable by jail. So Beck does deserve credit for pointing out this absurdity.

Beck never said a person would go to jail for not purchasing Obamacare as that was a question ask of Pelosi by a reporter and presented by Beck on his show. So O’Reilly didn’t lie about Obamacare and if any error is claimed about what Beck said it is definitely in doubt. However you and the articles original claim that Fox News, through Mr. Beck, was lying about Obamacare is itself a bald-face lie.
