16 more dogs seized in probe into dogfighting ring

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Animal welfare officials say they have rescued an additional 16 pit bulls that were surrendered during an investigation into a dogfighting ring that spanned several Southeastern states.

Authorities said Wednesday that Demontt Allen of Houston and Sandy Brown of Brownsville surrendered the dogs, who have been taken to a temporary shelter in an undisclosed location.

Investigators seized more than 370 pit bulls and pit bull mixes in late August as part of an investigation into a dogfighting ring which includes defendants from Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.

Officials say 13 people have been charged for their involvement in the ring.
