In his final season Kevin Revis is rising to the occasion, both as a player and a leader.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior right guard, one of five Mocs voted in August by the players to be a team captain, is playing better than he ever has. And he's leading like he never has as well.

"Our offensive guys voted him player of the week this week [for his play against Georgia Southern last Saturday]," Mocs coach Russ Huesman said. "He's been as solid as it gets."

The former all-state player from Rhea County High School, who began his collegiate career at Tennessee, said it's hard to judge how he's playing, though he feels he's improved with the help of offensive line coach Alex Atkins.

"Coach Atkins has done a lot for me," said Revis, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 280 pounds, "as far as improving my techniques. And the guys playing beside me are playing a lot better, so it makes us all look better."

The play of Revis and the offensive line has helped UTC (2-2, 0-1 Southern Conference) average 405 yards and 31.5 points per game. The Mocs are third in the SoCon with an average of 263 rushing yards a game.

UTC will try to get its first SoCon win Saturday at home against Western Carolina (1-4, 0-2).

Mocs quarterback Jacob Huesman said he sees improvement in Revis' game.

"I feel like he's gotten a lot better in pass protection," said Jacob, who is third in the SoCon with 90.5 rushing yards a game. "He was always a good run-block offensive lineman, and I think he's gotten a lot better at pass pro."

Mocs junior center Patrick Sutton, who may start at left guard this week, has been lining up next to Revis for the past three seasons. Sutton said Revis really has embraced his captain's role.

"If we mess up in practice he'll get onto us a little bit, and he'll get on the scout team if they're not going hard," Sutton said. "He's a little more vocal than he has been and he gives the speeches to the offensive and defensive lines before the games. That's something he hasn't done in the past."

Revis is also watching out for his younger brother, Jacob, a 6-3, 295-pound true freshman center on the scout team. They've never played on the same line and won't this season, but they are teammates.

"I'll ask the coaches every once in a while how he's doing on the scout team or talk trash to him and tell him he's got to get better -- you know, older brother stuff," Revis said, smiling. "I finally get to watch him play a little football, something I haven't been about to do much except for a few games here or there when we've had a bye week or something.

"He plays a lot like me: He's over-aggressive and tries to put his head in all the blocks."

Anthony quietly exits

Redshirt senior wide receiver Marlon Anthony, whose career began with great promise before stalling, has quit the team after dropping well down the depth chart in his final season. The 6-5, 220-pound former three-star recruit played late in blowouts against Georgia State and Austin Peay before quitting, having caught one pass against the Panthers.

Coach Huesman said it was Anthony's decision to leave the team.

Anthony caught 17 passes as a redshirt freshman in 2010, making the SoCon all-freshman team. He started every game in 2011 and caught 27 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns. He started six games last season but had just 11 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. He spent much of his time during practice this season working with the scout-team offense.

Western Carolina is producing Saturday's game telecast, which will be shown in Chattanooga on WTVC partner This-TV (Comcast digital channel 208). ... Injuries will likely keep defensive tackle Derrick Lott (elbow) and left guard Synjen Herren (shoulder) out of Saturday's game, but linebacker Wes Dothard (ankle) and cornerback Will Johnson (shoulder) are expected to play, Coach Huesman said.
