Two hikers were hurt Saturday in separate falls on Signal Mountain trails, authorities said.

Late Saturday morning, a 21-year-old hiking with friends suffered a head injury when he fell about 30 feet down the bluff from a trail at Signal Point, according to a news release from Hamilton County Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell. He fell onto another section of trail, so Waldens Ridge Emergency Service easily retrieved him. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Erlanger hospital. His condition was unavailable late Saturday.

A few hours later, a 16-year-old broke his ankle when he slipped on Falling Water Trail on Signal Mountain, Maxwell said in a separate release.

She said the youth and his stepfather, who both live on Signal Mountain, were riding horses on the trail and stopped for a few minutes. The teen slipped and fell six feet, breaking his right ankle.

Waldens Ridge Emergency Service stabilized the youth and carried him out for medical treatment, Maxwell said.

Signal Point, a unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, is closed because of the federal government shutdown. Maxwell said Falling Water Trail is a state park and remains open.
